America's Got Talent: Kevin Skinner - America's Susan Boyle

America's Got Talent Season Four

V Saxena
Tuesday, June 30th of 2009 marked the third episode of America's Got Talent - Season 4. And with it arrived a slew of promising new talent, including a young "hip" magician, the "fabulous five" sisters from Utah, and most notably, countryside resident Mr. Kevin Skinner.

At first glance, Mr. Skinner appears a shy and unsophisticated country bumpkin best suited for "chicken catching." But as the American proverb goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover." Kevin Skinner may be old-fashioned and passe, but a talent-less hillbilly he certainly is not.

With just his guitar by his side, Kevin unleashed an emotional love balled that quickly silenced the entire auditorium. Everybody was literally left stunned, some even teary-eyed, myself included. Some of us are quick to label others as boring, lame, or dare I say, "white trash", but it is gentlemen like Mr. Kevin Skinner that prove all such dimwitted stereotypes as inherently wrong.

Britain was the first country to learn this lesson. With the arrival of Susan Boyle, the entire world tuned in to see the lonely old cat-Lady quickly rise to the top. And now here we stand months later, watching as the same story unfolds in the heart of America. Will Kevin rise to the top, only to tumble down in depression and fatigue? Or will he stride past Susan Boyle, and morph into the next musical icon of our age? Only time will tell.

But what I do know for certain is that Kevin Skinner possesses the potential to accomplish everything that which he dreams. He may be a simple-minded country boy with a penchant for herding chicken, but he is also an incredibly talented, sincere, and brave soul who may perhaps one day be an American hero, as well as Susan Boyle's first successor.

All you critics should be ashamed of what you say about the talents of Kevin Skinner. He doesn't have to be suave and sophisticated looking and talk like a professor to be great. I think someone who sings from the heart and lives the same way are far more talented than the "Book learning actors and actresses". They ARE the real God given talents and should not be referred to as "a simple-minded country boy" THAT is just uncalled for. I wish Kevin the best and hope he does make you all ashamed of saying things you do. I agree with Azbek, don't break this man, he is great.

Don F - I agree! I love the late Keith Whitley (who like Kevin Skinner was from Kentucky!) and think that Kevin's voice is very suited for Keith Whitley's songs. I thought that the first time I heard Kevin sing. I'd love to hear him sing "I'm no stranger to the rain". I just LOVE that song. I think Kevin Skinner is just awesome and I do hope that he is successful. I think that even if he doesn't win AGT, he will have a career in country music.

Never listened to Keith Whitley before, but I promise to look him up! Knowledge is power; that includes musical knowledge as well :-D.

Great article! I've watched the performance many times over now and it still moves me to tears. What a special and wonderful gift Kevin has. While I hope that he wins, I also hope that he will be able to handle all of the pressure and that no one tries to take unfair advantage of him. I'm looking forward to hearing more from him.

Kevin Skinner touches your heart and soul with his singing and his unassuming personality. This man is the real deal. I hope he stays the person he is now as he gets fame and fortune. Many people in show business and the music industry need to learn to be humble. This man was born humble and his singing and playing is from the heart. He is sharing his gift with the world.
