America's Got Talent Top 10 Performances

How Do You Compare Apples-to-Apples on This Show?

Sandy James
This year's America's Got Talent show has some of the best performers ever, but how do you compare apples-to-apples on this show? How do you compare the operatic voice of Jackie Evancho to the illusionary free-motion act of Fighting Gravity or dare-devil bicyclist Jeremy Vanschoonhoven?

America's Got Talent Top 10 contestants exploded last night with great performances that gave viewers a wonderful talent show. I'm not sure how the voting will go as there are many different types of performers and I find it difficult to compare them. Will the winners be judged by popularity, by whether or not their act will draw a crowd in Las Vegas, or by talent? It's hard to say, and the results for America's Got Talent Top 4 acts should be interesting. I will let you know at the end of this article who I hope will make it into the America's Got Talent Top 4.

The America's Got Talent line-up started with Studio One Young Beast Society coming out strong with their dance routine. This group of high energy youngsters gave it their all with new tricks and all three judges called them "phenomenal". Their routine definitely got the audience on their feet but will it be enough to make America's Got Talent Top 4?

The two acts that I don't think will make it through to America's Got Talent Top 4 are the singing duo of Christina & Ali or Taylor Mathews. Both acts sang well last night but are not top performers compared to the other acts. Taylor Mathews took a risk by singing a well-known classic, "Wonderful World" and gave it his own upbeat country-reggae style, if you will. It was his own arrangement and done very well, but his voice and talent does not compare to Michael Grimm or the talent of Michael Grasso.

The dance routine of Anna and Patryk got off to a rough start with a fall from Anna as she descended some stairs. She quickly got up, gained her composure, and continued with a fabulous performance. The America's Got Talent judges all gave Anna words of encouragement by calling her a "true performer" and a "star" for completing her solid performance. Anna was visibly shaken by her fall and it will be interesting to see whether or not voters will give them a "sympathy" vote and put them through to the Top 4.

I was a bit disappointed in the performance of Fighting Gravity. This group of college men did a segment about a lunar landing, however, for me, the "Wow" factor was missing in their performance. I've considered Fighting Gravity to be one of the top contestants in America's Got Talent and they're definitely a Las Vegas act, however, last night was not one of their best performances. Will they make it into the America's Got Talent Top 4?

The most unique act on America's Got Talent show is that of dare-devil bicyclist Jeremy Vanschoonhoven who performed superbly. His timing was perfect, he had no mishaps, and seems to have recovered quite well from his previous fall. At one point during his performance, the front wheel of his bicycle came off leaving viewers to think that it was a malfunction. The gasps and moans from the America's Got Talent audience were loud and clear, but Jeremy continued on with his performance as it was part of the act.

Illusionist Michael Grasso is this year's Wild Card contestant in America's Got Talent and he's proven himself over-and-over again to America's Got Talent viewers. His performance was fantastic and Judge Howie Mandel crowned him, "King of Magic" last night. The "Wow" factor was there in Grasso's performance as he appeared and disappeared and reappeared during his act.

There are two opera singers in America's Got Talent Top 10 contestants and I think only one of them will make it into the Top 4. Although Prince Poppycock had a solid performance that was colorful and patriotic, his voice does not compare to that of Jackie Evancho. Prince Poppycock should definitely be on Broadway where he would undoubtedly be a smash hit.

What can you say about Jackie Evancho? Jackie Evancho is a superfind for America's Got Talent and once again, she was perfect in her performance. Judge Sharon Osbourne described Jackie's performance as "heavenly" and it was. A solid performance for USA's little darlin' and this writer is counting on her advancing to the Top 4.

Michael Grimm gave his best performance ever on America's Got Talent and hopefully, he too will advance to the Top 4. With his raspy, soulful sound he sang to Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" and he ditched his guitar so that he could perform better to the audience. It worked as he connected well with the audience and it gave us a chance to see Michael in a different light.

Who would I like to see in the America's Got Talent Top 4 contestants? There's no question that Jackie Evancho should make the Top 4. She deserves to be heard and has performed brilliantly in every show. Fighting Gravity is also a classy act, although they did not "Wow" me last night. I think Fighting Gravity may have blown their chances last night and is going to have strong competition with Illusionist Michael Grasso and Studio One Young Beast Society. Michael Grimm is someone that I enjoy listening to and I compare his style and voice to that of Michael McDonald. My fourth pick? The uniqueness and talent of Jeremy Vanschoonhoven is something to watch. His talent amazes me and he would be a great act in Las Vegas.

There's my four picks, who is your Top 4 picks?

I wouldn't know #1 from #3450. I don't watch this show, my husband does in a different room!

That will be interesting to what they use as their criteria. Yesterday's performance by all acts were superb.
