America's Got Talent Winner 2010 and Finale Show - Need for Voting Changes?

Jeff Musall
One reason I like watching America's Got Talent is that it's not American Idol. AGT allows any age, and pretty much any talent, to compete. American Idol limits the age range and talent pool to young singers.

Where the shows are basically alike is in the voting. Multiple votes are allowed "per method." A person can vote by phone, text, or online. One person willing to do so can vote maybe 30 times. And just who is willing to vote that much, to wait through busy signals, to go through the hassle? Mostly tweens and teens with too much time on their hands.

So the winner of American Idol is usually the singer the tweens and teens have most fallen in love with, not the most talented. And the winner is usually from the South, as that's where the most viewers (and votes) come from. Why else would whoever his name was that one the last American Idol win over the very talented current pop star Adam Lambert?

It's no indictment of Michael Grimm to question the voting methods and to ask if America's Got Talent is in danger of plunging down the same rat hole as American Idol if they fall prey to the same loaded voting. Grimm is a better singer than anyone winning Idol well, ever. Kelly Clarkson being the only possible exception.

Still, I had hopes that America's Got Talent would not pick another pop singer. The young opera singer Jackie Evancho, to me, would have been a better choice. More out of the pop mainstream and more indicative of a wider talent pool. And her duet with Sarah Brightman gave us proof of just how good the human voice can sound.

Prince Poppycock, although a unique and interesting act - and a personal favorite I might add, was good, but not as stand-out awesome as Jackie Evancho. As for Fighting Gravity, an interesting act that was deservedly in the finals, but again - not the timeless quality of Jackie Evancho.

Again, Michael Grimm is an outstanding singer, and should outshine anyone winning Idol. But one can't help but wonder how America's Got Talent 2010 might have turned out with more representative voting.

I think he should have won- of course he would have! Puppy dog good looks, sexy voice, the gals likely went nutty voting for him! I would have if my fiance hadn't kept making fun of me for gawking whenever the kid sang...

    I love the talent shows!

Representative voting? Can't figure that comment out. Michael Grimm's talent shone through, and as Bill Medley said, only about 20% of his talent was showcased on AGT. Michael has fans, those fans voted and Michael won. What does any successful entertainer need - fans!

I saw Prince Poppycock on Jay Leno last night - now there's someone I'd like to throw something at :) And no, I didn't expect Jackie to win. She's too young and her voice needs to mature properly, plus she's not Vegas material.

The more talent shows the better. It is cool to see people try to achieve their dreams

Personally I also think Jackie should have won. I wondered if maybe her particular talent wasn't right for Vegas, but she deserved the prize and the recognition. Her talent goes way beyond Vegas. I love Sarah Brightman, but like someone else said, Jackie's voice seemed better that night. In my opinion, Sarah seemed nervous or something - although she probably sang that song a thousand times. I don't know.

wow. i never pegged you for a reality TV competitoin spectator type. that's no indictment of you, I'm just saying (Olbermann is on over those too isn't he?)

My picks all made it to the final four, and although I voted for Evancho to win, I'm pleased with the results. I enjoyed listening to Evancho again last night, but thought Brightman's voice was a bit shrill at times.

There is concern that Evancho (like that British soprano years ago, Charlotte Church) is going to damage her voice by pushing it. Sarah Brightman alluded to that on the show. Perhaps Ebancho has a talent to sing (though some of her notes are questionable), but she has no talent as an entertainer. She might sell CDs, Poppycock might fill an auditorium, but Michael Grimm might do both.

The ten year old has not even got the full range of her voice yet. She cannot be a spotlight entertainer at Vegas...She could not have won....and her beautiful voice wont go away she will be a star one day. I thought fighting gravity is great and I can see them getting a contract at Vegas.Michael has the looks of Sinatra when he was young and a twinkle in his eye that appeals to women and girls of all ages. I think it was a prefect vote. The young child just sings, is not an entertainer she has a lot of growing up to do but she had a ball.;)
