NMCP Contest Celebrates the Everyday Deeds of Dogs
The America's Next Top Dog: Canine Cop of the Year contest was inspired by McGruff the Crime Dog, a world famous canine who teaches children about crime prevention and awareness. McGruff may help to take a bite out of crime, but the Canine Cop of the Year contest seeks to honor family dogs who "protect and serve" in their own unique way.
Whether it's protecting the furniture from fallen crumbs, keeping the family cat in line or bravely guarding the food bowl, your dog's everyday deeds could earn him the coveted Canine Cop of the Month award. To involve both local and national animal protection organizations, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and The Washington Humane Society (WHS) will participate as judges.
Who Is Eligible to Enter?
All dog owners who are legal residents of the United States can enter their pooch into the NMCP's America's Next Top Dog: Canine Cop of the Year contest.
"This contest gives everyone the chance to recognize their own dog's special contribution to the betterment of their family or their community, whether it's something serious like a K9 police dog or a therapy dog, or something a bit more tongue-in-cheek like patrolling the kitchen for snacks," said Janine Vaccarello, Chief Operating officer of the National Museum of Crime & Punishment.
Creativity and props are encouraged, but submissions must be appropriate for all ages. Additionally, photos should not portray dogs in any situation that is inhumane or dangerous, or in a way that appears to be unsafe for the dog.
"Canine Cop" Contest Rules
Submissions for each month must be received by the 25th. All submissions received after that date will be considered for the following month. Winners will be announced on the 29th of each month.
Monthly winners will receive a featured spot on the NMCP website, Facebook page and e-newsletter, a press release sent to local newspapers and TV stations, and an annual family pass to the museum. In addition, monthly winners will enjoy celebrity status on "Canine Cop Day" held the second Saturday of the month at the National Museum of Crime & Punishment. The winning photo will be posted at the museum, and visitors can receive half price admission just by stating the winning dog's name at the front desk.
Each monthly winner will also qualify for the nationwide vote to determine the America's Next Top Dog: Canine Cop of the Year. The Grand Prize winner will receive a trip to Washington, D.C. with their pooch and the opportunity to march in the Independence Day Parade. They will also receive a professional photo session with a D.C. pet photographer, and be featured on the cover of the Canine Cop 2012 calendar, sold through the Humane Society of the United States.
About the NMCP
The National Museum of Crime & Punishment opened in 2008. Its mission is to provide guests of all ages with a memorable insight into the history of crime, crime fighting and solving by providing an interactive, entertaining, and educational experience. Attractions include a CSI Experience, a high-speed chase simulator and FBI shooting range, Americas Most Wanted studio, and a room where visitors can try to hack into a computer, crack a safe and test their Wild West shooting skills. The NMCP museum is located on 7th Street NW between E and F Streets in downtown Washington, D.C.
