America's Pants on the Ground

S. E. Masters
The racial and social divide relived all over again on national television and to audiences in other parts of the world. The culprits: American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. We preach human rights and democracy all around the world, but don't act very 'united' by the time the winners are announced on these two ratings toppers. America's plumber's crack exposed, and that ain't pretty. Maybe to a plumber's wife (the producers) who adores the big guy's fat paycheck.

Both shows have sold out to viewer racial and social bias. American Idol was not intended to be a talent developmental show, but rather a show that recognizes true talent that should already be polished when it hits the stage the very first time. At the close of the second week 2 or 3 really good contestants shine brightly, while the other twinkles of stardom should just pack up and go home. But, the producers allow viewer prejudices in choosing who advances each week. That's why I'll miss Simon Cowell. He grasped the show's true concept and stuck with it. Let's see if his 'The X-Factor' gets it right.

Everybody ain't a fan of the hugely popular country music, but by the time the last season's finals rolled around, both finalists were accepted by the overwhelming majority of viewers because both of them had convincing soul felt talent and unique individuality. Who should have won can still be debated, but at least there was no threat of a riot.

DWTS is another story. What we witnessed last season was confirmation that we have a deep rooted problem in the best nation in the world. Practically every aspect of our American society is afflicted with the 'wannabe syndrome.' Perhaps I can push for a supplemental change to DSM-V? Every social and racial group wants the prize to themselves - all of the time. Sect socialism within the democracy in front of a 'candid camera.'

The Middle Eastern countries have had clannish infighting for centuries. By the time my country reaches its 1,000th birthday on July 4, 2976 we will have the same problem, but worse. The legacy of DWTS will be that of the prototype precursor to civil war. Last season's show was a mess from the start - second only to the O.J. trial. Damn, why did I mention that?

Most will agree that the judges should be the judge with minimal viewer participation. Even then judge's personal biases will be questionable. So I've come to the conclusion, let's just enjoy the shows and whoever wins won, shake hands and come back swinging next year with our pants off the ground.

DWTS I believe is Dancing With The Stars. I agree with your conclusion. Let's not begrudge the judge but just celebrate the winner. Nicely done S.E.

    Stay tuned Chris.

Interesting. I often felt that the true talent did not go forth because of the demographics on American Idol. DWTS I am not as familiar with.
