America's New Politics

When Lies & Rhetoric Cost Lives

Rose Richmond
As we watched the Tuscon, Arizona tragedy unfold last week, we are reminded of the political climate in America, since the 2008 election circus. The rhetoric has flown over the last 3 years. People either in office or running for office, have been called Socialists, Communists, Muslims, Anti-American and more extreme titles. Many have been ridiculed for supporting President Obama and his agenda. Supporters have been subjected to beatings, being called N------- Lover and other names referring to being friends with black people, and other not so flattering names. All in the name of politics and winning.

They tortured us with commercial after commercial, rally after rally. All which was broadcast night and day on the TV. If it was said, they put it on the news. We were subjected to taunting and so called facts about President Obama. His birth certificate issues and his Muslim connection. Republicans and Tea Party supporters swore we would be a Socialist Country before Obama ended his first term. The health care bill, which has been around in some form for years and years, was supposed to be the final nail in his quest for a Socialist takeover in America.

The TV and the other side have done everything in their power to discredit and destroy President Obama and anybody who supports him. The entire Democratic Contingency in both the Senate and House has been treated like they had all just got off a plane from Russia or China. The rednecks have come out of every corner of the country to proclaim that "Country Boys Can Survive" and they ain't gonna let some black boy come in and turn their country into a Socialist Country. "By God"! They hung their Stars and Bars and got out the ammunition.

When people like Sarah Palin and "I will follow you anywhere" McCain saw that just mentioning Obama in their rallies and saying Socialism, fired up the crowd, they scrambled to get any little tidbit about him and exploit it to the max. Only, they were not taking into account, the extremists and the racists and the crazies that are so abundant in America. Soon people were literally getting into fights at rallies.

Threats were made and people got hurt. Across the country, whether in Podunk-ville or out in the big sophisticated cities, the sane people were beginning to wonder if it was safe to have an Obama sticker or ANY Democrats sticker on our cars or in our yards. Would the stupid people be bold enough to shoot out windows or run you off the road if you appeared to be a supporter? It was not clear. Many scary things happened all over.

Now, the health care bill has passed and we just finished another round of elections. Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic Representative, is fighting for her life and six families are dealing with the tragedy of losing their family members. All caused by Jared Loughner, a 22 year old, crazy, misguided person. A kid not even old enough to understand the Government, but so disgruntled by it, he chose to kill because of it. He has listened to all of the stuff that has been pounded into his brain about the Democrats and he took action. Is he the only one out there? How many more innocent people will lose their lives to rhetoric? How many skinheads or KKK or other extreme nut case organizations have followers that will do stuff like this?

America's politics have changed. We are so inundated with news about everything these days, we can't ignore anything anymore. It isn't about "What is right for America anymore". It is about who wins and who is in control. No matter, the collateral damage, like the Arizona shooting, just so they win. Politics have become so greedy and so about the "Parties", it has lost the reason, it is there. The candidates running for office will say absolutely anything about their opponent, if it helps them win. Look at Michelle Bachmann. She will say absolutely anything about the Democrats. She doesn't care about the consequences of her outrageous comments, she just keeps on spouting lies and hate. It is that way across the board. Yet they are considered to be fine, upstanding people. OK! John Boehner got on TV and told us that the health care bill was going to destroy America. It was going to bankrupt America. No regard for how people who don't understand Government were going to perceive the rhetoric.

Jared Loughner has problems, no doubt. He has formed ideas and opinions that are extreme. He lost control and went on this rampage. But how much can America take? With the information overload we live in, it gets maddening to continue to listen to the crap. The TV clowns talk and talk and rub salt in as many wounds as possible. The people running our Government, lie and cheat and manipulate and talk bad about each other and never seem to accomplish anything anymore. They are in "Lame Duck" Session year round now. We are told on a 24 news cycle that Obama wasn't born here, still. When is enough, enough? When does the Government have to take responsibility for what they say and what they do? Without Congressional Hearings!

It is sad that our country is on the brink of failure and our status in the World has gone to the lowest in our history. Yet, our main concern is not to work together and fix the problems we have. It is to fight and divide and conquer. It is to destroy the other side. It is to make sure that black man don't win again.

It is very tiring to live in America. The Land of the Free, Home of the Brave is becoming the laughing stock of the World. We are so focused on keeping people down, we have stopped caring about Americans. We only care about our version of what is right, winning.

The politicians have found if they stir up the masses, they can create such a diversion, they can sneak in the door. Arizona's tragedy is an example of that. Only, I think this may have backfired. People are really dead here. He killed them because of the things that have been said. The words said without responsibility from the people saying them. Will that be enough to give solace to those families that lost loved ones? Probably not.

You are right, it's all about who wins and who is in control--it is exactly what is wrong with this country. Congress rarely, rarely uses common sense and compromise to legislate this country. They take extremes to the left and right and try to shove it down our throats. Wouldn't it be nice, if just once, the congress and senate decided to do what is right for America rather than what is right for their political future? I won't hold my breath.
