America's Toughest Sheriff Keeps Tight Rein on Missing Baby Gabriel Mom

Rik Merchant
"She's been quiet, cooperative, not a problem in our jail. Maybe she's got a dual personality," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Baby Gabriel's mom Elizabeth Johnson just yesterday, January 27- Johnson is in Estrella Jail, Phoenix, Arizona. The jail is just one of the several Maricopa County Jails run by Sheriff Joe.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's statement indicates behavior different from what the public is used to hearing about Elizabeth Johnson, who is prone to rages and domestic violence abuse- to the extent that she caused nearly $2,000 worth of damage to the apartment that she once shared with Baby Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary, whereby she allegedly smashed a mirror and TV set, tore apart a baby crib, and cut up McQueary's and Gabriel's clothes, among other damage (the police list of damaged items did not show any baby things). Stating that he was afraid Johnson would hurt Gabriel and himself, McQueary filed for an Order of Protection. But Elizabeth Johnson in jail is another story.

Johnson in jail has rare opportunity to cause trouble "We have her in a separate cell, isolated from other prisoners, for her own safety. She can come out once, one hour, to take a shower by herself," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who dresses his inmates, male and female, in pink underwear, pink socks, and black-and-white striped uniforms. The inmates sleep on pink sheets, use pink towels, and when handcuffed, wear pink handcuffs.

Elizabeth Johnson is isolated in jail for her own safety because she is despised by many. The public hate her for what she said she did to Baby Gabriel- whether her story that she killed him is true or her story that she sold or gave him away is true. And Estrella Jail inmates have the same popular hate for a woman who has hidden her child- dead or alive- from a concerned nation. Although some have voiced concern that Johnson believed she had reason to run away with Gabriel.

Johnson could be charged and prosecuted for murder if Baby Gabriel does not show up alive- or dead, even if no body is found. Whether she is tried in Texas or Arizona. Both states have a history of murder charges against defendants in cases where the body of the murder victim was not found. The defendants were prosecuted for murder and convicted. "You know, I think there're only about four cases in history and we have two of them. The David Anthony case where he's on death row. We have another one right now, waiting to be extradited, that we investigated here, without the body," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

America's toughest sheriff, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, plans to keep a tight rein on Johnson until her trial, which could become a murder trial. If not, her trial will be based on the following four felonies: conspiracy to commit custodial interference; custodial interference; kidnapping; child abuse. In the meantime, Johnson remains in isolation and is behaving. "She hasn't been causing any problems but you never know," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Before Elizabeth Johnson was arrested, there was this warrant on her: A felony warrant for Custodial Interference was issued for the abductor on December 28, 2009. They [Johnson and Baby Gabriel] may be traveling in a white 1995 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with Arizona license plates AGZ4214, which is similar to the vehicle shown. They may travel to Texas or Mexico.

That's interesting about having two of the four cases--in a morbid way obviously. :)

While I hope this matter is resolved, with the baby surviving, I'd be hard-pressed to rely on the psychiatric diagnosis of a knuckle-dragger like Arpaio.
