Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge

Eric Brennan
Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge is home to the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. It is also the launching point for the famous Appalachian Trail. Springer Mountain is the southern start (or end) for the 2,135 mile trail and an eight mile trail leads from the park to the main trail.

But you don't have to be a hiker to enjoy this amazing Georgia state park. The gorgeous lodge brings all of the comforts of fine resort to the forest. The rooms are spacious and the views are intense at this top of the line lodge. Enjoy the amenities of the lodge after a day exploring the falls. Rooms start at just $79 but I would suggest spending the extra $20 and upgrade to one of the suites. The views alone are well worth the extra price.

Hikers are especially going to love Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge. Besides being the starting point for the Appalachian Trail, several miles of loop trails wind their way through the park.

But the best hike is to the Hike Inn. Accessible only by foot, the Hike Inn is the perfect place for hikers to rest their heads on a soft pillow and bed instead of a sleeping bag and tent. Amazing views, family style dinner and breakfast and a super friendly staff makes this inn extremely popular. The trail leading to the inn is a little over five miles and takes about three hours to complete. Visit their website here for more details on this amazing inn.

Amicalola Falls is a short distance from the main lodge and park entrance. A trail leads to the top and bottom of the falls. Over 600 steps lead down to the bottom of the falls, so prepare for a hard walk if you're not in shape. Amicalola is a Cherokee word meaning "tumbling waters" and aptly suits this giant waterfall. Huge amounts of water cascade down a rocky cliff and into the basin below.

A campground offers RV's and tent campers a place to stay at the park if the lodge isn't your style. Cabins are also available at the campground and contain all of the supplies you'll need for the perfect family camp adventure. A playground, gift shop and ropes course are offered at the park as well.

For more information on directions to the park, hours of operations and fees, visit the official Georgia state park website here.
