Amputation

Leaving Old Pain Behind

A Powers
I amputate that part of me

that, rotting with age, is weighing me down.

I drag it along, but worked over flesh

with worms and green veins

cannot do anything but slow my travels.

So I cut it; although it was already dead,

it burns and bleeds green and black

and finally red again,

healthy, strong blood from my veins.

I know that this is for the best,

to rid myself of an extra limb,

an ill-gotten burden,

but I miss the weight and it is hard

to leave it behind, the dust swirling over it

and around on the desert floor.

Very well written, and I can see exactly what you mean by breaking away from abusive relationships, whether it is a child abuse victim or domestic violence victim.
