Amy Adams Takes on Lois Lane in Zack Snyder's 'Superman' Reboot

Eager to move forward from the disappointing opening weekend of his latest film Sucker Punch, director Zack Snyder announced March 28 that he has found his Lois Lane.

The lucky lady taking on the love interest of the Man of Steel in the latest Warner Brothers reboot of Superman is none other than Amy Adams. The three-time Oscar nominee joins a so far impressive cast list, which includes Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as adoptive parents Mr. and Mrs. Kent and The Tudors' Henry Cavill as Clark Kent.

Though Snyder has had several successes in his short career, he does have a lot to prove with the Superman franchise, particularly after the disappointing $19 million opening weekend for Sucker Punch. In 2007, his film 300 opened to a surprising $70.9 million and even his much debated take on the Watchmen franchise opened to $55.2 million. Sucker Punch's opening doesn't bode well, especially after his film Legend of the Guardians opened to a miserable $16.3 million.

Adams joins a long line of Lois Lanes that originated in the 1940s -- quite a list to follow. Actress Noel Neill was the first live-action actress to play Lois Lane in the Saturday movie serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950). Neill later took over for actress Phyllis Coates on the Adventures of Superman television series that lasted from 1953-1958. Neill made special appearances in 1978's Superman as Lois Lane's mother and as dying billionairess Gertrude Vanderworth in 2006's Superman Returns.

Phyllis Coates appeared as Lois Lane in Superman and the Mole-Men in 1951 and later appeared in the first 24 episodes of the 1952 television series Adventures of Superman and appeared as Lois Lane's mother in the 1994 television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Margot Kidder is perhaps the most well-known Lois Lane of recent memory, having played the character opposite Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent in the 1970s and 1980s films Superman, Superman II, Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Kidder also appeared in the WB television show Smallville as Dr. Bridgette Crosby, a representative of Dr. Swann, who was played by Christopher Reeve.

Kate Bosworth is the franchise's most recent Lois Lane, having appeared in the 2006 film Superman Returns. The sequel to Superman and Superman II ignores the final two installments of the series, having Lois moving on without Clark Kent after he disappears for several years. Though the film received moderately good reviews, some reviewers were not overly thrilled with Bosworth's interpretation of Lane.

Zack Snyder's "Superman: Man of Steel" is expected to open December 2012.
