Amy Adams Will Play Lois Lane in 'Superman: Man of Steel'

Kevin Costner & Diane Lane to Play Clark Kent's Parents

Amy Adams will play Lois Lane in Superman: Man of Steel, the latest entry in the Superman movie franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Adams will appear as the ace reporter from the Daily Planet opposite Henry Cavill, who as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent is Lois Lane's co-worker.

Kent's alter-ego is the Man of Steel himself, Kal-El of the planet Krypton. The extraterrestrial Kal-El, as both Clark Kent and Superman, has a "thing" for Lois Lane, but she only has eyes for the superhero.

Oscar Nominee

The $175-million movie, which will start shooting in Vancouver, British Columbia in August 2011, is scheduled for a 2012 release.

Director Zack Synder, whose most recent movie is Suckerpunch, is thrilled to have Adams on board. In a statement he issued to the press announcing her casting, Snyder called Adams "one of the most versatile and respected actresses in films today."

Adams recently received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for playing Charlene, the love interest of junior welterweight champion Micky Ward, in the hit movie The Boxer. It was her third nomination: Previously, she had received a Best Actress nomination for her work in Junebug (2005) and another Best Supporting Actress nod for Doubt (2008).

She soon will appear in the long-awaited screen adaption of Jack Kerouac's On the Road.

Snyder is delighted to have her on board for his Superman remake.

"Amy has the talent to capture all of the qualities we love about Lois," he said, "smart, tough, funny, warm, ambitious and, of course, beautiful."

Meet the Parents

Superman: Man of Steel alo will feature A-list talents Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Clark Kent's human parents, who "adopt" him as a child when they find him in a Kansas corn field, after the completion of his trip from Krypton to Earth.

The roles of Superman's biological parents have yet to be cast.

In the 1978 Superman, the first big-budget comic book movie that gave birth to the genre, Superman's parents Jor-El and Lara were played by Marlon Brando and Susannah York. Although footage shot by Brando was intended for the Superman sequel, contract squabbles caused Brando to be dropped from Superman II. York took over Joe-El's role of providing advice to her son via crystals housed in the Fortress of Solitude.

Footage of Brando, who set a record for the fee paid to an actor for the original ($3.7 million for 13 days work, approximately $13 million in 2011 dollars when adjusted for inflation) was resurrected and used in the 2006 movie Superman Returns. That flick was a flop, and Brandon Routh -- the actor who played the Man of Steel -- was dropped. So far, there are no plans to feature Brando in the new movie.

There is one great mystery about Superman that I have never seen addressed. What did he do with his clothes after he took them of to become Superman? For Example, he might be it Chicago, fly to New York and again don his Clark Kent outfit, all without carrying a valise while in flight. This is one of the great mysteries.
