Amy Grant: A Biography and More About Her Music

Dan Hensley
Now a grown woman respected the world over, Amy Grant began her music career as a person who enjoyed it as pure recreation. She always loved to write and sing but never saw it as her calling, so she never actively chased it until a close friend, Brown Bannister asked her to record something in his studio. Bannister liked what he heard and , passed it on to someone who could make Amy happen.

Brilliance was found in someone who was a genuine everyday person working hard to pass muster in college and get her degree. The source for this is found in numerous interviews with Amy that include Intimate Portrait, the Official Amy Grant Web Page, and Wikipedia just to name a few.

Amy Grant has always had a love for traditional Christian music which served as a solid foundation to her growth as a musician. As a child, she always felt connected to the old church hymns. Amy's career reflects this even in some of her early work as she put those old hymns into a more contemporary tone done with taste that left listeners wanting more. Along her career path Amy would find that the schedule could be brutally overbearing, leaving her with a decision to make. Finish college or work in music for the rest of her days. I won't spoil the ending by telling you what decision was made. Mystery lends to excitement, read on.

These links will take you to an inside look at Amy Grant intimately. The videos are broken into five parts. Intimate Portrait, Intimate Portrait 2,
Intimate Portrait 3, Intimate Portrait 4, Intimate Portrait 5. These videos are a great look into Amy, it gives a deep look beyond the skin deep aspect. As a young man, I was a fan of Amy's because it was clear that she was coming from a real place in life versus some hyped up, flash in the pan, make a million and leave kind of approach. Truth resounded clearly in her song lyrics. Her work could touch everyone no matter where in life they were at that time. Not surprisingly, it is Amy's early works that continue to be the most loved.

"Love Will Find A Way" speaks about being a young woman trapped in difficult relationships and challenging times, but beyond the picture painted of the young woman still holding to hope is a universal truth that applies to everyone regardless of gender. Love will find a way, and in Amy's life, love certainly has found a way. She has been in two marriages, survived the fallout from that, and survived the harsh criticism of going mainstream. Under all the pressure when all appeared beyond repair...here is Amy facing it all with grace .In all of the changes Amy has been through, her personality hasn't changed one bit and her story is still the same.

Contrasting Amy Grant's earlier work with her later efforts such as "House Of Love" by comparison tells us not of a woman who threw her Christian career away, but felt led with a true need to be new in her expression of what her life is and what creative longings were there to be displayed in ways relevant to her faith, her world view. Indeed, the world of songwriters / vocalists / musicians is full of change brought about for very personal reasons, with some push by the corporate body if that happens to be one's contractual association. These things notwithstanding, Amy Grant moves forward with great skill to this day. Though the song linked to here was not on the album, it is presented as a contrast.

"Heart In Motion" as a well known multi-platinum work of art was likely the most dramatic of all Amy Grant offerings. That release proved to also have a lot of meaning because some portion of the proceeds went to help abused women. Songs like "Galileo", "That's What Love Is For", "I Will Remember You", and "Good For Me" made a statement not ever forgotten, but always replayed without hope of ever going away. I say that as a compliment because great art should live on. Going further back into Amy's discography brings us to a song that is simple yet powerful because of it's candid statement. "It's Not A Song" reminds us of the very personal nature of the core of an artist and what their greatest hope is.

Eclectic is Amy Grant's middle name, as evidenced by yet another famous work that talks about what inspiration love can bring. Teaming up by request with Peter Cetera was one of the greatest highlights of Amy's career. This song, titled "Next Time I Fall In Love" became yet another instant classic in 1986. Peter Cetera became a mainstay in the music biz when he created his masterpiece, "Glory Of Love" featured in "The Karate Kid". On top of her already well polished accomplishment, Amy Grant teamed up with Randy Stonehill on the '80s album "Love Beyond Reason" when they performed "I Could Never Say Goodbye", garnering a Grammy nomination.

Amy Grant has recently added her official biography, "Mosaic" to her list of works. In this book, she tells all in addition to everything the public already knows about her. Surely it is a treasure to those fans who listen to her exclusively. This is the result when love finds a way!

Nice bio. I met Amy, many years ago, when she was just getting started. What a sweet girl. (One of her college roommates was a neighbor of mine, so we spent some time together when she was in town on tour. She came to our Bible study.) Amy is the real deal. ;-)
