Amy Ray Shares Her Solo Side

This summer, Amy Ray hits the streets again with her latest release Didn't It Feel Kinder. Smart lyrics encasing emotionally and politically driven messages has allowed me breakthrough ideas and to become a frenzied fan. Amy's lyrics relentlessly stick in my head!

I headed out Friday, August 14th, 2009 to see the first two shows Amy Ray's August 2009 solo tour. The flight to Atlanta and driving sometimes seemed a little long, but it was oh-so-worth it! I also caught a glimpse of what the band does daily... they work hard; have to love what they do; and are completely committed. I am a fan for life and totally devoted.

Once I arrived in Atlanta, I met a friend who had rented a car, then we drove into Decatur, Georgia to lunch at the Watershed Restaurant (owned by Indigo Girl - Emily Saliers) . Indigo Girls have performed over the past 20 years, dedicating their works and commitment by giving back to their community on several different platforms, including clean energy and animal care. Not to ever forget, Amy and Emily's stand for Equal Rights, always, in the gay and lesbian communities. For more information, please see www.indigogirls.com.

The food at Watershed was very good, healthy and organic. Since we arrived mid-afternoon, their menu options were limited - only cold cuts; but what they served us was super fantastic. And the wait staff was incredibly friendly, especially since we were so excited to be there and, of course, I told everyone we were visitors from Texas! Next on the agenda was driving to Athens, GA; home of the 'Dawgs' - University of Georgia. Amy was playing at the 40-Watt Club. This city was quaint and quiet. We stayed in a condo right around the corner from the club, which was decorated in UoG colors and bulldogs. So as soon as we got there, it was time to get ready. I primped for several hours - ha! I saw the Tour Van right outside the club and it all started there. Too much excitement! Two bands opened for Amy, The Holland Dutch (http://www.myspace.com/thehollanddutch) and Bellafea (http://www.myspace.com/bellafea).

The venue was small enough and informal that the band members could casually walk around and socialize with everyone. Of course though, they were working and had to get their stuff setup, sound checks and such. The Holland Dutch reminded me of the B-52s - they were super cute; and since I now have their CD, I find myself listening to it over and over! Bellafea was powerful and very punk-rockie -- she signed for me, one of her handmade lyrics books; very cool! After they played, I had a chance to talk to Heather of Bellafea and Erin of The Holland Dutch and when I got to hear and see their personalities, the understanding and meaning behind their music becomes even clearer. Amy was intermittently setting up her things, greeting her friends, etc. I had my front-row place reserved! I can see Amy is true blue to the core and completely authentic in every way. Too bad some people are blinded by her politics because this girl is amazing.

The second day, I was all about getting on the road so we could be in North Carolina in time to get ready and settled for the next show. Amy was playing in Carrboro/Chapel Hill around the corner from University of North Carolina - Go Tarheels! The club was called The Cat's Cradle. As soon as I saw the venue and stage, I knew this was going to be a great show.

This time the opening band was Humble Tripe and then Bellafea again. Humble Tripe was so interesting. They played several different instruments -reminded me of bluegrassy-folk music-very interesting and entertaining! Heather of Bellafea rocked! The stage was lowered down to almost floor level --- like if you were on the front row (like I was), you could rest your elbows on the stage. So when the bands played, it was like we were all participating and playing together - very rare intimate moments-- -and Oh, SO MUCH FUN! Totally great community there in North Carolina and the entire crowd was a blast. I was worried about picking up another signed CD because this time there were so many people, but, Amy was generous again and really not even 15 minutes after the show, most people had left. There was a manageable handful of people which I believe were mostly her close friends hanging out.

Amy sang and sensationally delivered almost every song with her humble-but-genius rollicking vocal ruminations. She covered all three of her CDs - between the two days; all but Johnny Rottentail, Driver Education and Stand and Deliver (hope I can catch that one when she tours with Brandi); those I can think of right now. Amy Ray's assembly includes Lead guitarist, Kaia Wilson; drums, Melissa York; keyboards, Julie Wolf ----- all entirely illuminating. The energy was amazing; Amy - emotionally and authentically inspiring (like always), and consistently leaves me wanting more.
