Sales for Amy Winehouse's albums continue to do well after the singer passed away Saturday. It is a familiar story about how when a celebrity dies, suddenly the interest in their craft comes to the forefront. When Michael Jackson died, his album sales really took off, making many of his records top sellers for 2009. According to Reuters, within hours of his death, Jackson occupied the top 15 slots on Amazon's best selling list.
Entertainment Weekly reported Tuesday that Winehouse's Grammy-winning album "Back to Black" has seen a huge spike in sales. Her album stayed at No. 1 on the iTunes charts in both the United States and United Kingdom from moments after her death until Monday. By Tuesday, it had only fallen to the No. 2 spot. For the week of July 18-24, it looks like "Back to Black" will break into the top 20 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. That is quite an accomplishment for the singer and her album, even if she isn't able to enjoy it.
All of this interest in her best-selling record is definitely going to fuel rumors she had an unfinished album of songs that had not yet been released. If there are indeed tracks at a studio somewhere, it could turn into a gold mine of sales. Fans looking for one last chance to hear her talented voice behind the microphone could propel a new album to impressive sales, but there has yet to be a confirmation that such an album actually exists.
Winehouse's mysterious death was first reported Saturday afternoon, when the Internet became abuzz with misinformation of what might or might not have taken place. Entertainment Weekly reported she had passed away at the age of 27 in her London home. This news came about a month after she canceled her last concert dates and had reportedly been in a clinic for an unknown reason. There has been no clarification if she was found to have died of an overdose or anything relating to one, but it had long been known she was living her life to the extreme.
