Amy's Organic Shepherd's Pie, Review

I don't know how Amy's Kitchen does it but they once again have turned a frozen meal microwaved for a few minutes into a delicious wholesome meal you don't need to feel guilty about eating. In Amy's Shepherd's Pie the flavors are a perfect balance. The tomato flavor really shines through while balancing with large garbanzo bean, carrots pieces, leeks, onions, turnips, mushrooms and spices. Not one vegetable over powers the other. Even the layer of mashed potatoes on the top are perfect. They are light, fluffy, smooth and not too thick. The smell of it cooking in the microwave had my mouth watering.

I microwaved the shepherd's pie for 5 minutes as the box said and it came out visually a complete mess. It overflowed tasty, yet messy mashed potatoes underneath the container. I think the lining of the container had an air bubble in it which caused the mess This is not my first time having Amy's Shepherd's Pie, but this is the first time I experienced any problems with the container or it not coming out of the microwave looking perfect. Either way the little mess did not in the least bit take away from the flavor.

One whole Amy's Shepherd's Pie is 1 serving, vegan gluten-free and has only 160 calories and 4 grams of fat. A very small amount for something that is very hearty and filling for a light meal. It also has 5 grams of fiber, 5 grams of protein and a fair amount of vitamin A, C and some calcium and iron. Like most frozen foods the sodium is a little high at 590 mg. I heard that Amy's now makes a sodium-free version of this shepherd's pie, but I have yet to find it to be able to try it.

Just about every ingredient is organic with no GMO's. It can be heated in the microwave in only 5 minutes or cooked in a conventional oven or toaster oven in about 45 minutes. I have tried all three ways and I prefer the microwave because it is faster and because unlike most foods, this one I don't notice much difference between the taste cooked in the microwave or oven.

In cold or warm weather I find myself going back to Amy's Shepherd's Pie. It is full of flavor and very satisfying.
