Amy's Scariest Moment at Halloween

Amy Stepp
I grew up in Akron, Ohio and every Halloween you would find all the teens, tweens and adults, and perhaps some kids gracing the long lines at the local haunted houses that had been in our area for ages. Up until I was 8, I never wanted to see what were inside those houses, but one year I got the itch to be brave and begged my dad to take me to the haunted house. Him and my mother warned me and begged me not to go because they knew it would freak me out, however I was tired of being a baby and I decided that I was ready to venture into the Haunted Houses.

On the way over to the 2 haunted houses I kept telling my dad that when we get done with the first house we need to make sure we have enough time to go to the second one. He just kept laughing and said alright. Little did I know at that time, he already knew I wouldn't make it to the second one. So we pulled up to the first Haunted House, got out of our car, and headed for the line. ThereI was, surrounded by all the local teens from the high school and thinking that I was pretty big and brave to be in line with such older kids. Dad paid for our tickets and we headed into the dark door.

This haunted house had three floors, which you started out on the top floor. My dad said he would go ahead of me so I could hold onto his shirt so I would know where I was going, seeing that those type of houses are pitch black. We turned one corner and out jumped "something" (and to this day I still don't know what or who it was") and I let go of my dad's shirt. I frantically started to swing my arms so I could find him and then I latched onto his shirt again and we kept walking.

About a couple more feet there was this skeleton sitting at a desk with spiders crawling out of his eyes. Then it talked! It said "Hello, Amy (which is my name) sleep with one eye open tonight because I know you live on Thornapple Ave (which is the street I lived on). Now talk about freaky! I grabbed my dad's shirt and yelled "Daddy, lets get out of here!" and then the man in front of me said "sorry little girl I am not your daddy". I shoved him to the side and ran toward the only light I saw and that was the exit sign! When I opened the door there stood my dad.

Come to find out weeks later that my dad told the man in front of me to do that and the skeleton who knew who I was, well it was one of my brothers friends from high school that was working there. My parents try to reassure me for weeks and months on end after that, that I will be OK, however, to this day I still won't go into a haunted house. Safe to say we didn't make it to the second house that night either.
