Amy's Vegan Shepherd's Pie: Vegan Product Information and Review

Vegan, Gluten-Free, Non-GMO Shepherd's Pie

Amy's Kitchen makes a variety of meatless vegan and vegetarian entrées, including Amy's Shepherd's Pie, made with organic vegetables and topped with organic mashed potatoes. If you didn't grow up in the English countryside or have never heard of shepherd's pie, think vegetable stew in a pie with mashed potatoes on top instead of crust and you will have a pretty good idea of what shepherd's pie looks like.

I love finding ways to make traditional, hearty meals into meatless, dairy-free, vegan delights. Although I prefer to make them myself from scratch, I don't always have the time and sometimes rely on companies like Amy's Kitchen that offer vegan and vegetarian entrées for easy meatless, dairy-free, vegan meal preparation.

As vegans living in the cold, rainy Pacific Northwest, my partner and I have a special appreciation for hot, hearty, savory vegan meals - not to mention that both of us just generally enjoy eating tasty vegan foods. So, when we spotted Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie at our local PCC Natural Market, we decided to give it a try.

Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie: Product Information and Nutrition

Amy's Kitchen Non-Dairy (Vegan) Shepherd's Pie is made from organic vegetables and is meatless, dairy-free, gluten-free and GMO-free (free of bioengineered ingredients). This meatless shepherd's pie comes in a single serving recyclable cardboard package and is easy to prepare in the microwave, oven or toaster oven.

Each serving contains 160 calories, 4 grams of fat, 590mg of sodium, 27 carbs, 5 grams of dietary fiber, 5 grams of sugar and 5 grams of protein. Additionally, this meatless, non-dairy, gluten-free shepherd's pie offers 50% of the daily recommended value for vitamin A, 30% for vitamin C, 10% for calcium and 15% for iron.

The sodium content of Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie is higher than I would like, but the vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron and protein make me happy. When you consider that Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie is meatless, dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan and GMO-free and still manages to offer a hearty, savory main dish, the nutritional offerings really are quite good for a pre-made frozen entrée.

Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie: Taste, Texture and Cooking Tips

The taste and texture of Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie really is just like a hearty vegetable stew sans the liquid and topped with mashed potatoes. I have never cooked it in the microwave, but I have had consistent results in the oven and toaster oven. I prefer to broil it for a couple of minutes after the 45 minute baking time (if cooking in the oven) just until the mashed potatoes begin to brown a bit.

As usual, I add salt, pepper and some other spicy goodness when I make Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie, but the amount of spice Amy's Kitchen uses is likely fine for folks who do not require as much flavor as my partner and I do. For a pre-made frozen entrée, it's really quite good.

Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie: Overall Review

Like I mentioned before, I prefer to make this type of vegan, dairy-free, meatless, gluten-free entrée from scratch, but in a pinch (or a moment of laziness) Amy's Kitchen Vegan Shepherd's Pie is a convenient, mostly healthy frozen entrée option for folks who are on a meatless, dairy-free or gluten-free eating plan, or who are looking for meatless entrée options.

Great article! I'm trying to transition from vegetarian to vegan, but it has been a slow process for me. I had no problems cutting out meat, but cheese and ice cream are more difficult for me to do without. I'm working on it, though.

Sounds doable, though like you, I'd rather make my own from scratch.
