An Alaskan Travel Guide: Beautiful Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay

During the summer when I first moved to Alaska, my mother and I decided to take a marine cruise. We had to leave out of Seward, which is about 120 miles from Anchorage. The drive is long, but it goes by quickly if you're in good company. Be sure to have your camera ready, as there are lots of photo spots along the way. Just pull over and snap a few pictures of the beautiful scenery!

Once you get to Seward, it's kind of difficult to find parking. My mother and I actually had to park on a little league baseball field. Seward is a quaint fishing village. The original town of Seward was actually destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1964. Most of Valdez was destroyed, too. however, Seward actually fell into the water. So, the residents decided to move their town a little further inland, to keep them safe from any other earthquakes that may hit.

The town of Seward is quite adorable, but I won't get into that as this is a review on the park rather than the town. I think I already put up a review on Seward, anyway. If not, I'll be sure to put one up in the near future.

Mom and I boarded a boat with about 30 other passengers. The weather was nice, though a little chilly. After all, it was August and we just left 95 degree weather in New York! So, we bundled ourselves up and prepared for our 5-hour voyage. Needless to say, we were very excited at the prospect of seeing all sorts of wildlife in their natural habitat.

The little ship wove through Resurrection Bay and Prince William Sound, showing us all of the interesting sites, including the pipeline. There's this old prison set all the way out at the tip of an island that overlooks Resurrection Bay - talk about isolated! You can also find a deserted army base, oyster farms and all sorts of sea life. Mom and I saw sea lions, puffins, bald eagles and even an otter. We were too close to land to see any whales.

Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay is surrounded by glaciers and mountains. Be sure to bring your camera, as there is no other place like it in the world. It is absolutely gorgeous. I wish Dionne had come with me - she would have had a field day taking pictures.

At the smaller parks in the area, you can go fishing, kayaking and all sorts of other water sports. You won't find anyone water-skiing. It's Alaska, remember? However, lots of people participate in scuba diving. From what I understand, Whittier is a better place to go for that.

If you ever go to Alaska, you should definitely make a trip to Seward and go on one of these mini-cruises trough Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay. It's definitely worth it.
