An Alternative Therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorders

Terri Beck
I have Asperger's Syndrome, a form of Autism. I learned I had this disorder a couple of months ago. People with Asperger's function normally when it comes to intelligence but not when it comes to social skills. All of my life I had trouble socially, I just could not fit in with people. I would try to convey the thoughts in my head and they would come out wrong. It was such a relief to find out what was going on and why I did not fit in with people. When I discovered I had a form of Autism, I wanted to know what the best treatment for it was.

To Medicate or Not to Medicate

Some people choose to take medication for this disorder. Asperger's Syndrome is not curable. It is not a disease and does not really require a "cure". It does require some specialized therapy. Knowing this I chose not to take medication for this disorder. I do not think it is a good thing to try to medicate something of this nature. Doctors are only beginning to understand Asperger's and there are no medications that really improve the symptoms. Hans Asperger was an Austrian doctor, he first discovered Asperger's Syndrome in 1944. However Wikipedia states that his findings were largely ignored until 1990. Many doctors are uninformed when it comes to treating this disorder.

Audio/Visual Therapy

I was very lucky when it came to being diagnosed. A few months ago I was going through a rough time in my life and I decided to see a therapist. One of the problems I was having was insomnia. Due to the insomnia and other issues, my communication was at its worst. I found a therapist who treated insomnia with Audio and Visual Therapy also known as Light and Sound Therapy. I had never tried this kind of treatment before but I was desperate for some help. It just so happened that my new therapist had a lot of experience treating people on the Autism Spectrum. After some questions and spending a good amount of time with me, she confirmed that I had Asperger's. She explained to me that the Audio and Visual therapy would be great for my condition. I was skeptical but I gave it a shot. I went in with an open mind. I am happy I did because I am doing so much better today.

A Better Version of Me

It has only been a few months since I have been doing my therapy but I can really see a difference. I am still basically the same person but I can think more clearly. One of the things I was concerned about when seeking treatment for my Asperger's, was that I would not become a completely different person. I like me, I like the way I think and look at the world. I did not want to destroy that. My therapist assured me that I would only improve myself. She was right! My communication has become much better with my new therapy. My insomnia is also getting better. It is not a miracle cure, of course, but I really am noticing a lot of improvement. I still have a long way to go and I will only get better. I recommend Audio and Visual Therapy to anyone with any form of Autism!

I have provided a link to my therapist's website. You can learn more about Audio/Visual Therapy and where to find help in your neighborhood.
