An American Reality

What Will We Do About Our Economy?

Ira Harleman
It is that time of the year where politicians fight for our vote. They will say anything to make us believe that they will change how our government works. These politicians preach that they will restore us to the time of prosperity, where everyone had a job, a home with a white picket fence, and kids who did their homework before dinner time. A time where you can go out and see your local sheriff "Andy" and his goofy but hardworking deputy named "Barney" patrolling the neighborhoods.
In the real world the jobs are gone. There was a time our country was a producer, leading other countries in supplying the world with quality made goods. These goods were American made and competed well with against other countries. The United States was also a major consumer as well and the rest of the world knew it. These countries knew the smart way to do business with America is to work with them not against them. Their markets needed the American Economy too stay strong, so we will continue to buy their goods and services.
In the eighties, the United States began to change with the help, let us say, to the fall of communism, the Berlin Wall being destroyed, the beginning of the internet and any other reason you may seemed appropriate. It could be because of the list of great movies like "The Breakfast Club", "Sixteen Candles" and many others "coming to age" flicks. But this is what I remembered. Some people like Warren Buffet and many others looked at the world as a global market. They notice that fortunes can be made if our business structures would change with the new economy. Mr. Warren Buffet even went across the United States, speaking at universities explaining the ideal of Globalization.
The ideal of globalization inadvertently led to the end of textile mills in America. To understand this we have to realize the major hurdler of doing business outside the United States was the "costs" which was followed closely by "quality". So actually the textile industry was a good testing industry. All it was needed was a large facility were they can transport their equipment. They already had the demand and the cost of training was not an extreme due to the fact it was mostly "on the job training". The equipment wasn't high tech and it was dependable. Eventually deals were struck with our government concerning our trade laws. These deals open the dialog with companies and competing nations who were interested with ideal of a global market. Companies after companies made deals with any country who was interested. So the cost went down and the companies left. It started out with simple low but profitable industries and then eventually after the education of other nation grew as did the opportunities.
Most of these opportunists were actually educated here in the United States. Then once these young adults graduated, our country sent them on the way because the student visas were invalid. So these young adults took everything they learned and the connections they made with them back to their countries. Remember the old saying" it is not what you know, but who". So now the rest of the world knew something that most Americans did not, that the term "global market" was going to change the face of American economics. These countries saw that they were gaining on this one-time leader of the industrial revolution and the average American never saw them coming.
Today we live in a customer base society; the jobs are low paying and provide small hope for the future. The cost of living continues to go up as we make less. The supply for jobs is over shadows by the high demands for employment. Then you have the people who are in the high paying services jobs telling everyone else to take any thing they can get. The compensation is not enough to support even a moderate family. Town after towns is disappearing because the cost is too high to operate. The government demands more and more taxes each year to pay for things that we do not need but that they want. These officials live in a different world that the average Americans.
Americans need to stop thinking about the past and began to change to the global ideology. We need to open up communication with other nations to create jobs that we can keep here. We need to realize that our next-door neighbor is not to blame because he needs the government help with food. We need to understand what the market is, in order too capitalize on it. We need to look at every country as a potential client. We want to make our clients happy, because without them we don't stand a chance.
Some people are still concern with who is at fault. Is it the Republicans or the Democrats? Well just think about this, if you had just met me and you like the person I represented because I told you that I am just like you. Then you open your wallet and wrote me a blank check. You handed it to me and say thank you. You didn't advise me on what to do with this check and you didn't even oversee where eventually this money will go too. As a matter of fact you didn't even check me out. Then of course I took all your money. That is what we did with our politicians, our government and our White House. This has continued to happen year after year. We continue to fight over the crumbs that our government gives us. Instead of trying to find the our own ingredients and feeding ourselves.

Did you know it costs 7.00 dollars per call to have an American answer it? It only cost about three dollars for a foreigner to answer and only .35 cents to have a machine answer it. Bye Bye Telemarketing!

The game changer is the rise of China becoming the world factory; even able to import raw materials and export the finished product at cheapest prices. Also, the internet & other modern technology. The way forward for US to seize initiative is through R & D in science, becoming self-sufficient in energy through renewables. But China is running away with the spoils of globalization! Tough road ahead, for sure!
