An Apple a Day Does Not a Fortune Make!

Is This What You Would Call "Easy Money"?

Sue Gibson
A young man asked an old rich man how his fortune he had earned
The old man, rubbing his fine new clothes said, "by experience I learned.
During the depth of the Great Depression back in 1932,
I was down to my last nickel and I didn't know what to do.
With that coin I bought an apple, and polished it a long time.
At the end of the day I sold that fruit, and for it I got a dime.
The ten cents I invested, and with two more apples in my hand,
I polished them and made them shine, I was a business man.
Almost a month I worked this way, my fortune to acquire,
But accumulation of more funds was really looking dire.
It seemed that all my profit was going to buy more fruit.
My arms were tired from polishing, and still I had no loot.
All this work with it little pay just made me want to holler,
Then my wife's father died and left two million dollars."
