An April Fools Story

A. Ormont
My family are all huge Disney fans. My kids, then ages 9 and 2 both wanted a trip to Disney World but had been told that they had to be bigger before we'd be able to make the trip. So, then, April 1st, 2009, my husband and I, after much debate and consideration, booked a trip to Disney World. We decided April 1st would be a great time to tell our daughter, age 9, who was very into April Fools jokes!

So, she comes home from school and we sit down to dinner. Dinner, by the way, is candy and dessert foods disguised to look like real food. My daughter bit into her "hamburger" and shrieked, "what is this?" It was cleverly disguised cake, cookies and icing that really looked like a hamburger. The carrots were orange candy "coins" that really looked like sliced carrots. And, the milk was flavored with extract to a mint flavor (think mint ice cream but it was really just extract and it looked like plain milk!)

After that, we decided to break the news and we told the kids we were going to Disney World in the Spring. Now, after that dinner joke, she didn't believe a word we were saying! We tried to convince her and finally, my husband succeeded in getting her to believe it was true.....of course, he follows that with...."April Fools!" and she looks crestfallen that she fell for the joke! She tells us we are mean and not fair to do that to her and goes to her room and slams the door!

I go up to try to smooth things out and tell her that it really is true after all. She doesn't believe me! We go around and around for a while believing and not believing. Finally, she decides that we must call the Reservation Line at Disney World so she can hear the confirmation for herself. Finally, she believes it! It was a really funny night and one that my daughter will never forget. She will never forget how she learned of her first trip to Disney World!!!!!
