First, put something to protect your table underneath the paper to be colored on. A newspaper, or maybe just another sheet of typing paper would work. Then place the paper to be colored upon on top. Give your child a few bright and/or bold crayons. The idea is for the entire sheet of paper to be filled up with coloring. Your child must press hard to make the colors dark on the sheet. Try to to leave any white space between colors.
One option is to section off areas of the paper by drawing outlines of shapes that touch at the edges to color in with different colors or patterns. This will help ensure the entire paper is covered in color.
Once the sheet is entirely covered with beautiful, dark crayon markings, use a black crayon to scribble all over the beautiful design. This is an essential part of the process, and ensure your child that his/her creation is not being ruined by the black crayon all over their design. Again, use dark, heavy markings to cover the entire design. Now the fun begins!
Use the semi-sharp or sharp object (observing all safety precautions necessary, of course) to scratch a design onto the page. Be careful not to press too hard this time. Otherwise, a hole will likely be ripped in the page! You child can scratch all of the black crayon off of the design, or maybe draw another picture over the design. Whatever lines are scratched off will appear as though they are fluorescent or glowing!
