If you have dark cabinets that have been previously varnished or treated with a wood polish you can easily reverse this by using a product called TSP. I have a 3 year old in the house with breathing problems and didn't want to hurt him with a strong wood stripper so I opted for a TSP substitute. This can be found at major retailers and some small home improvement stores its about $3.50 for a small container of it. All you need to apply this is a white rag preferably linen. Look for a bar mop towel at your local store it works great.
Put some on the rag and go over your cabinets making sure that you cover it completely. After you have done this you will notice that some of the shine is gone and it will look sort of dull and feel smooth. You should definitely use a primer in my case I used (Kilz) this is a great product it covers just about anything and there is no need to keep reapplying. After you have used a primer you can start to paint I used a high gloss white paint you can use whatever color you choose. I painted my cabinets directly hanging in their original place and only painted the front. Since I was going to replace the hinges and knobs it really didn't matter if I got paint on them. I bought the hinges at my local mass retailer and they were about $1.00 a piece. I also chose some wood knobs that come two to a pack for about $2.00 a piece. The reason that I opted for the wood knobs instead of the fancy metal ones is because with all the great metallic spray paints that are out these days you can buy a bottle for about $5.00 and spray them yourself they look just as good and save you a lot of money. This project took me about three days to complete and my kitchen looks like I just paid thousands of dollars for new custom cabinetry. It all cost about 50.00 to update and was well worth the money I love to find a bargain and when I can do something myself and keep some cash in my pocket I am all for it. I will I plan on redoing my flooring here soon so keep checking back I will have some easy steps for you !
