An Equine Wedding and Reception

Jan Hoadley
Arrival at the wedding in a white carriage pulled by an impeccably groomed horse the bride steps out of the carriage into the wedding. Or perhaps, as some have chosen to do, do away with the carriage and get married on horseback. However you choose to include horses in the wedding decorating at the wedding and the reception can be creative, fun and not too expensive.

Perhaps you have a detailed love of horses, competing in dressage. Markers at the end of the seating could be letters from a dressage arena. Or perhaps reining horses is a big part of your world, or your spouse trains horses. Whether specialized or general there's ways to make decorating for the event truly memorable. Perhaps nestled in the boquet is a small horse - with the "mini whinny" horses from Breyer these can be found in many colors for under $7 for a set of pinto, appaloosa or jumpers. The little horses are smaller than many flower blossoms so they could add to without dominating an arrangement. These are also easily topped on a cake or around the bottom of the tray.

A white hat with pretty trim or lace might provide a different kind of headpiece. The invitations could carry a horse image. These small touches can be done at indoor or outdoor weddings. A few people have actually had outdoor weddings with their horse a part of the wedding!

Much of the decorating seems to happen at the reception - and some of the biggest expense! You might opt for plainer napkins and highlight the tables with model horses. Think little touches - make inventive signs for the restrooms with "colts" and "fillies" to temporarily put over mens/womens restroom signs.

Breyer horses make permanent centerpiece momentos long after the wedding. With some careful shopping there's some with four or five horses for $35-40. Careful shopping online can bring good deals also. If this is too expensive still - search toy sections for toy horses. These work well around the serving area as well as on the tables throughout the reception area.

If you have a little more to spend the Stablemate sized Breyers have little barns and other accessories available. Larger sized Traditional horses can serve as larger centerpieces.

These are small ways to get horses into the decorations directly. Many online sites have equine decor that are easily found with a search. Clean or new bits might be used in creative ways. Horse shoes might fit around the base of candles. colorofhorses.com has some wonderful creative craft ideas available for free at their website. Rubber stamps may be used in many creative ways as well.

Weaving horses throughout your wedding plans may be done as boldly or as subtle as you want with many great ideas out there. Use some imagination to highlight your interests and make a creative, memorable wedding and reception!

My fiance and I are engaged to be married.. and our ideal wedding is horseback. I've been looking for pics and other ideas to consider in designing everything.. and there's not much to find on here. Except like Gatlinburg.. but we dont need to go there when we have the whole package at home.. Does anyone have any ideas or know where i can find some at? It would be much appreciated! ;-)

I would love to get married on horseback :) A black horse for me and a white horse for my boyfriend. I think the contrast between the wedding dress and the black and the tux and the white would be beautiful.
