An Evening of Illusions

Giggles, Tears, and Love

Bubba
It had been a long day. I was sitting on the porch watching the light fade into darkness. The aroma of fresh cut grass had mind mind wandering to the days of my youth. I was stronger and bolder then. I could cut grass while the supper was simmering even after a full day at work. Today it was an effort to put supper in the crock pot and finish the dishes before collapsing into this rocking chair... I must be sick, I can't be getting old.

I snuggle deep into my old brown sweater. Y'all know the one my daughter claims I stole from an ancient Canadian Lumberjack. It has holes in the elbow patches, strings hanging from the bottom seams, smells of tobacco and spilled coffee yet is warm and comfy. It's amazing when the kids and grandkids come for a visit and the chill of the evening begins, someone always ends up wearing Grandpa's old brown sweater. More than one baby has been wrapped in it to sleep on the way home from the campfire...

One more day filled with giggles, tears and love is fading into my memory. I padded into the kitchen for a refill of my coffee mug. The aroma of chili and fresh baked corn bread still lingers in the air. God has almost completed drying the dishes...One more mug of coffee and He should be finished. I noticed the cookie jar was in the dish drainer... No cookies for Grandpa tonight...Darn!

I returned to my rocker just in time to see a huge deer leading his family to the crick for a drink. He looked at me as if to say "This is my family leave us alone!" The squirrels were chattering in the tree as if to tell the old stag... "Grandpa is a nice old man, there is a salt block near the crick under the old apple tree."

The phone was ringing. I grabbed it and then came the song..."Do your ears hang low" all seven verses... Do your eye balls droop will they float in your soup...finished my little half pint. Just another smile for my memory book... I can sleep with peace now. When I awake I'll wonder "Did Half Pint call or was my mind on overdrive again?" Tomorrow is a new day filled with more giggles, tears and love even if it may all be in my imagination....Mizpah ;-}}>
