An Examination of Public Informal Writing

In today's day and age, evolving communications are drastically affecting the world of academics and writings. Public writing outlets such as Facebook, Myspace, and cellular text messages are revolutionizing the traditional methods of writings and communications. While some might find these generational innovations to be valuable and unique generational contributions, the truth of the matter is that in the long term this method of public writing has harmful and devastating contributions.

Public writing is generally tied to the younger, emerging generations. Many consider this method of communication to be fun and even entertainingly addictive as well as convenient to a generation that wants to multitask and do things quickly. Public writing however, has significant consequences that can hinder an individual's opportunity to succeed in the academic and professional world. The biggest issue with utilizing public writing methods is that people either forget or never learn to write properly. This leads people to face severe hardships in college and within the workforce. Another consequence of using this method is that people never develop the ability to distinguish when it is appropriate to use the public method and when it is more suitable to use the academic style of writing. This can be a major issue in a classroom setting when students are turning in scholastic academic papers with no punctuation and use of words or abbreviations that are informal.

Academic writing adheres to specific, grammatical, punctuation, and syntax rules. Academic writing strives to develop ideas in a concise manner while simultaneously integrating enhanced and eloquent vocabulary. Academic writing is universally useful and is commonly found in everyday situations. Academic writing is used in all types of professional forms, newspapers, and books. Thus, if one is unable to understand how to use or read the proper style of writing, one becomes put at a major disadvantage in society.

Public writing appeals to the fads and trends of the moment and is perpetually changing and variable in its composition. Public writing obviously appeals to the younger generations and has devastating affects to their futures as they assume positions of adults within society. A catalyst to this change besides the generation itself is the various media outlets that contribute and endorse these changes. MTV and Myspace might be two of the most influential forces behind these changes. Public writing can have devastating affects to all aspects of life. If this style of writing infiltrates through our society and replaces the style of academic writing, then the realm of academics, business, and professional careers may suffer indefinitely. Also, along with changes in just the literary and writing aspects, the language and methods of verbal communication will also be affected. This could create a lot of irreversible damage and changes as the English language experiences a variety of changes and alterations.

While each generation strives to contribute and develop something new into the current established society, perhaps restructuring the methods of writing communication is not the best target to try to alter and remodel. Public writing could remain as a way to communicate so long as the individuals who decide to use it understand how to distinguish when its is appropriate to use.
