2) How long is this vacuum cleaner going to last me?
An average vacuum cleaner will last a few years, be wise in your purchase in getting something nice, as it will pay off years down the road. This is definitely a necessity for your house cleaning routine, and the vacuum cleaner will be used once or more every week for a few years. You certainly want something that will last a good amount of time. Spend the extra money to go the extra mile in getting something nicer if you have to.

3) Does it have the portability I need?
Portability is important when purchasing a vacuum cleaner, as vacuum cleaners are used in nearly every room of your house. Vacuum cleaners usually all have long enough cords to reach about one or two different rooms, but be sure to consider the cord length, as it's easy to plug in your vacuum cleaner into one outlet and go from room to room, instead of plugging and un-plugging constantly. Also, if you have a house with an upstairs, keep in mind that you're going to have to carry your vacuum cleaner up and down the stairs. If you get a light vacuum cleaner, it should be no problem, but a heavy weight vacuum cleaner might become a problem otherwise.

4) Does it fit the environment that I'm going to use this vacuum on?
You should also consider what kind of floors you are going to be using it on, as some houses have hardwood flooring, carpet, or both.

5) What level of maintenance is this going to require?
There are bag less vacuum cleaners that you can empty the dirt out of easily, and there is the kind where you have to purchase bags and dispose of them. Bag-less vacuum cleaners cost you more in the long-run because you have to continuously buy bags for them. Personally, if you're looking for something lower maintenance I prefer bag less vacuum cleaners as they are easy to maintain and clean, but the easier to use vacuum cleaners some times cost a little bit more.

6) Bag or bag-less?
If you have pets or someone in your family with allergies, it's highly recommended that you buy a bag-less vacuum cleaner. The difference that these two factors make on your vacuum cleaner purchase is that bag-less vacuum cleaners often leak dust, pet hair, etc. and it does have a good amount of impact on your allergies. Bag vacuum cleaners seal in all these particles that could possibly effect your allergies. Bag-less vacuum cleaners are easier to maintain, though, as you don't have to keep making vacuum cleaner bag purchases.

7) What brand to buy?
There's no particular brand recommended to buy of vacuum cleaners. Brands sell both good and bad products. The best idea would be to read up on reviews of certain vacuum cleaners that you have in mind for purchase, and go from there or get a sales representative working at any department store to help you. At stores such as sears, there is a sales representative there for your assistance strictly just for the purchase of vacuum cleaners, whom you will find in this section of the store. The cheapest vacuum cleaner for purchase is not always the best, and vacuum cleaners aren't always the same. You definitely want one that's going to get the job done, but you also need to make sure you're getting your moneys worth.
