Schools out and summers here, the kids are running wild with tons of pent up energy and absolutely nothing to do or so they say. That leaves us parent's struggling to find new and fun ways to keep them occupied though out those long days of summer. A wonderful way to spend a day together here in Spartanburg and to keep the kids learning while their having fun is by taking them on a tour of Cowpens Battleground. Time your trip to arrive by 9 a.m. and take a few minutes to view their autiovisual program entitled 'Cowpens- a Battle Remembered'. After the video, ask a ranger for the Junior Ranger Activity Book which has a scavenger hunt for the museum located inside. Then take a tour of the museum where you'll see replicas of the guns used in the actual Battle Of Cowpens. After the tour treat the family to a hike of the Battleground Trail. Which is a 1.2 mile scenic trail that includes Green River Road, This is where the actual Battle Of Cowpens was fought. This is a good time for the kids to use their activity book. On the trail the kids will learn the actual height of a Continental soldier. They can also see the Washington Light Infantry monument. Of course, rangers are always available to answer the tons of questions your kids are sure to have about the famous battle.

After the hike the kids are sure to be hungry and begging mom for the scrumptious picnic lunch she packed that morning before leaving home. A short drive will take you to the picnic area which has both covered and uncovered tables where you can enjoy your lunch. After their done eating, let the kids burn off some more energy by playing Frisbee or baseball in the field and then take them on an exploration of one of the nature trails. After lunch drive around the 3 mile Battlefield Loop Road and stop to look at a few last exhibits before heading home. On your way out of Cowpens stop by Abbott Farms for some fresh peaches, delicious salsa, jams and jellies. Abbott farms is also known for their famous Blenheim ginger ale, a unique, spicy treat that's made only in South Carolina. After a wonderful, active day spent in the outdoors your family will be ready for a delicious southern dinner. And what better place to get it than the famous Wade's restaurant at 1000 N. Pine St in Spartanburg. Wade's is known for their delicious southern fried chicken, fresh veggies just like grandma use to make and there absolutely, awesomely delicious strawberry shortcake and homemade banana pudding.
