An Experiment in Stereotypes- The Dumb Blonde Myth
Little Did He Know I was in My Master's Program at the University!
I must preface by saying, when I go out, I really like to put on the ritz. My hair is done, really fun clothes, perfect makeup, you got the idea. Anyway, I went out dancing one night with my friends to a country western club. The usual crowed was there and a few extras. I love to dance, so by then I had built up quite a few regulars to dance with. But, ahh, there's always the newbees. Anyway, I had noticed for a long time that since I did my hair blonde, I was getting more attention from men, however, not the type I was interested in. They seemed to be talking just a little slower to me then they used too. Also, in a more condescending way, like I was a bit of a child. This had gone on many times over the weeks and months, since my hair change. It was really starting to get irritating. Mind you, I had a lifetime of being treating like I could actually think. Well, if I got the chance, tonight was gonna be the night. I was going to see just how gullible a man can be when he's around a blonde. You'll love this!
I was dancing for awhile with all the regulars, that actually new me well enough to know I had a brain. They new better than to confuse me the the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz. Well, that's when the victim to my experiment came up to ask me to dance. We were just doing a nice, slow two-step, so talking was quite viable. I noticed from the beginning he was talking to me SLOWLY, like I had brain damage. This kind of irritated me. We were talking for awhile, when I asked him what he did for a living, and he said a truck driver. He then asked me what I did. Here was my chance. I said "I work for Dairy Queen". He said 'Oh Really", in the most condescending way, I have ever heard. This is where i get him. I said with my hand twirling in a circular motion, "Yes, and do you know how hard it is to get those swirls just right". He said 'No I can't Imagine" I really had him going. But, boy did he deserve it. After all, he was the one treating me like the proverbial "Dumb Blonde," from the beginning. Anyway, I proceeded to ask him why he was talking to me so slowly, he said "I don't know". Well, I did. It was so obvious it was pathetic. I then asked him if he believed I worked for Dairy Queen. He said "Yeah, Why". I said "I was only pulling your leg, I'm really in my Master's Program to become a counselor". With that in the middle of the dance, he threw his arms off me, stopped dead from dancing, and said "Your not gonna analyze me are you". With that, I said "No, your not really that interesting", and I walked off the dance floor. That was a night to remember.
Moral of the story, think twice before you go with the old stereotypes, what you see, may not be always what you get, and most importantly, don't dance with men who talk real slow to you. It just goes to show ya, the old stereotypes, are alive and well, and living in the good old U.S.A.!

Post a CommentI'm so sick of steriotypes! I have natural blonde, and it changes the degree in the seasons, which annoys me. For once I'm glad somebody tried this out, because if you look on Yahoo Answer about some of these steriotypes, there will be people that say blondes are dumb and it makes me angry, because their reason is that they're dumb, because their blonde, and they're blonde because their dumb, as I said, people said this, not me. Well it nice to find a few people out there that don't believe the myth, because even some of the people in my school district believe it, some of the guys in my grade last year shouted out in the middle of science when we were talking about, I believe heredity and genes, that I thought blondes are dumb, when they knew me and knew that I was just as smart as this one girl that everyone thought that if she couldn't get the question right, nobody could.
Wow, I'm with Joanna. If you're going to write an article discussing the intelligence levels of anyone, blonde or no blonde...and especially going on about your own! Then you really need to at least ensure that you've used correct spelling and grammar... Way to be a hypocrit.
Ah, our society today, we condemn racism but we still believe ideas of misconscrewed sterotypes that a women's intelligence lies within her hair color. My hair is a golden blonde and still manage to maintain an A average with my full honors courseload while juggleing a 12+ hour athletic schedule on the side. Oh and my IQ is 144
Joanna: And Albert Einstein often wore two socks that didn't match, so what's your point? Consider what I have accomplished in my life, I'm not too worried about not being the best speller in the world. Perhaps you should be more worried about your perfectionistic ways that you project on to others, and your obvious negative attitude!

i'm not saying that i agree with the blonde stereotype, because i completely disagree with it - and i think it is totally unfair that women specifically are judged by the colour of their hair. but, for someone who is not naturally a blonde to write an article complaining about being treated like she is stupid when she dyes her hair blonde, to go on and make FOUR spelling mistakes in it, is the biggest irony of all.
it's people like you that let the side down and allow women to be treated like idiots! if you want to know, i am blonde and it is natural.
After reading your article, i'm absolutely astounded that you or no one else has noticed the spelling mistakes you have made...?
"Well, let me tell you what some contacts, and allot of Miss Clairol can do!" -- there is NO such word as alot, nevermind "allot"!!! it is "a lot" or nothing at all.
"The usual crowed was there and a few extras." -- 'crowed" what? do you mean 'crowd'?
"I was dancing for awhile with all the regulars, that actually new me well enough to know I had a brain..." -- i thought maybe this mistake was just a typing error, but then you went on to do it again.
"They new better than to confuse me the the Scarecrow in..." -- the word is "knew" not "new".

i know heaps of blonds aren't stupid
I'm blond with an 120 IQ, received straight A's in HS and was classified as highly creatively gifted. I had my first offer to have my writings published at only 12.
My hair changes from a very dark blond in the fall and winter months to a light blond in the summer and I've noticed that without even having a conversation with me some people judge me by the hair color. It really is just annoying.
I'm a natural blonde and everyone thinks well ohhh she's stupid and slow and all that stuff and doesn't it make u feel like u never wished that u were a blonde! But he i am still blonde and i'm loving it, no one can change my feelings for being who i am... and i like the way i am! =)
