An Fourth of July Letter to President Obama

A Strategy for Passing a Health Care Package

Lloyd Gavin
Mr. President:

One of your campaign pledges was to restore informed debate and bipartisan governance in Congress. These are desirable principles on which to govern in a two party system. For they encourage inclusiveness, thereby forging a stronger and more cooperative nation. Further, when citizens see their government representatives placing the good of the country before their party's desires, they are encouraged to behave likewise.

However recent history brandishes an unnerving pattern of Republican opposition followed by Democrats abdicating their position in order to build bipartisan support. Often this desire for bipartisan support results in loss of valuable legislation for the common good. The Senate now has its 60th Democratic Senator. Thus it is important to use this advantage to move the country forward with or without bipartisan support.

Thus, I call on you to lead the fight to enact a health care package with a public option that encourages financial and moral responsibility in the health care industry -- with or without bipartisan support. After a series of such successful moves, opposition to the common good will dissipate as it is human nature to be a part of a winning movement.

This is more important than ever right now when we are on the brink of electing a congress who will overturn what little healthcare we have.

I agree that something has to be done about health care and greedy insurance companies, but there are a lot of things in the current bill on the table that trouble me, for instance mandatory euthanasia couseling for seniors. I am going to be a senior soon, and I don't want that. The current bill could be improved, with biparison help, to keep our freedoms and freedom of choice intact. I don't think that congress should pass just anything just to say they passed something. They need to READ the thing before they vote. I really don't trust the Federal government with my health because they have already failed us on the jobs front when they enacted laws that sent our jobs to China. I don't trust them. There is a low, angry buzz just under the surface of American society at this government because they have already given us the shaft. Thank you for sharing your point of view; we are all entitled to our own opinions, at least right now.

Something has to be done, my mother has cancer and if she did not have medicare and her supplemental, she would be sunk. If I were to end up with the same diagnosis I would be sunk even with insurance.
