An Innocent Man - A Poem

Nichole Appleby
"Order! Order! Stand!"

I don't understand why the judge wears that ugly wig.

This is it. My life will be determined, by a man

In a zip-up dress wearing a wig.

"Has the jury come to a final decision?"

I didn't do it! I didn't kill him!

Why would I kill Jim?

I secretly loved him.

Nobody listens to a single woman, who hates

her job. Yes, he was my boss.

Yes, he recently had to fire me. But it was planned.

We chose together, that he would fire me so we could be happy.

There was to be no in office dating.

We never "officially" dated, and we never told one soul.

And now, someone has murdered him, and I'm to blame.

I just want to see his burial. I want to say farewell.

My heart aches.

"The jury's decision is...the defendant is guilty!"
