An Inside Job: Why You Should Fill New Positions with Workers You Already Have

Todd Hicks
Is it correct that you are preparing to fill a few positions in your organization, particularly those that are at the management level? If so, you should consider filling them with employees you already have. You will learn the benefits of internal hiring.

There are certain costs that have to be taken into consideration. By not considering a pool of applicants outside of the organization, you will not have to spend money on advertising. As a result, you will save money.

You are going to avoid the hassle of dealing with a crowd of strangers. Why do it when you do not have to? You know the staff members you have. You are familiar with their personalities, attitudes, leadership abilities and work habits. Furthermore, you already know if they have the skills and educational background that make a good fit for any particular position you are focusing on.

You are not going to have to spend too much time looking at resumes. One reason is that you are familiar with the qualities and abilities your workers possess. Another is that you can quickly look at the resumes you have on file for a handful of your staff members instead of looking at resumes that are submitted by hundreds of job seekers you have never met.

In addition to being able to escape the process of looking at a lot of resumes, you will probably not have to conduct any interviews. This is especially true if you are comfortable with walking up to some of your staff members and offering them the new position on the spot. You will save a lot of time by not conducting interviews.

Even if you choose to officially interview the employees you have in mind, there will probably be a lot less tension experienced than if you interviewed outside candidates. One reason is that it can be unsettling to talk with those you have never met. Another is that your employees are likely to be relaxed from not having to do a lot of preparation or being perfect to have a realistic shot at getting the position.

There are two more benefits you reap from this process. One is that your staff will see the confidence you have in them. Another is that you probably will not have to do much training, especially if the employee you move to a new position already knows how to do just about all of the tasks in the organization.

You now know the benefits of internal hiring. By using this process, you will save a lot of money and time while doing your staff a favor.

It is probably best to keep an open mind. You make some good points, but, in some circumstances, the outside hire may be the better one.
