As one had explained the comprehensive and collision, just to go over that you have to make sure the deductible fits your pocket book at any given day of the year and the deductible is not per year this deductible is per occurrence.
Collision = when your covered auto collides with an object moving or not.
Comprehensive = act of nature (hail, animal, etc.) or vandalism, and theft. This also covers glass too, so make sure that you know that.
You as the purchaser of the auto insurance need to make sure that you speak with the insurance company to make sure that this is something that your car is worth. If you make payments on your auto than you must carry this coverage and most lien holders have a requirement on the deductible.
There are options that you can add to your auto insurance that are ONLY for auto accidents and should be known, Rental car coverage on your auto policy is for an auto accident only, not if your car breaks down. This is a very good coverage to add because car repairs can take a long time and from personal experience it is not cheap to rent a car. You can sometimes get a discount, but that isn't a guarantee.
Auto insurance is black and white when it comes to accidents and what is covered and what is not covered. So many times your auto accident can be handled pretty quickly. It is the homeowners insurance that is really tough, and which I can't state whom I have worked for but this requires a licensed homeowner's adjuster. In a lot of cases depending on your insurance carrier there is an agent involved who sold you your insurance and that agent knows what they sold you, but they can't by law tell you for sure if it is covered or not they will refer you to the insurance company.
What you need to do, first you need to put your trust into the carrier you chose.
Make sure as a homeowner that you have a savings account with your deductible in it and emergency money. (You never know what is going to happen)
The insurance company usually has a 24/7 call center rep there to take your call but that doesn't mean that there will be an adjuster there ready to tell you that whatever happened is covered or not.
You as the homeowner should be given choices, if you had a pipe burst and you have water damage you really need to listen to the insurance company, they need to send out a restoration company to make sure the water is cleaned up properly because if it isn't mold can grow and that can cause further damage and result in further issues.
Homeowners insurance is a grey area and like the legal field needs to be handled by the professionals.
So as a consumer for insurance and has dealt with a lot of unhappy people, please to protect yourself make sure that you know what is covered on your policy and what isn't.
When it comes to if your home was broken into, of course get a police report and call your insurance company but before that happens to you, make sure you keep your proof of purchase. Keep these in a safe place that can't be stolen. For example iPods, laptops, TV's, rings, anything like that receipts, pictures, serial numbers something put all that into a safe deposit box and away from your home - same with the fire. The insurance company will want a list of what was stolen, and cash isn't covered!!!!
Just a little information so that you the consumer can be more educated on what you and I both know we have to have but most know nothing about
