An Interview with Dan Radcliffe Leaves Harry Potter Fans with Mixed Feelings

Just What Did Mr. Potter Have to Say?

Amy Brantley
Harry Potter fans around the world cannot help but be excited over Dan Radcliffe's latest interview. In an interview that appears in today's edition of The Sunday Times, Dan Radcliffe talks about being Harry Potter and he also talks about his roll in Equus, but the real reason Harry Potter fans are excited is because this interview includes a small bit of a conversation that Dan Radcliff had with J.K. Rowling. Dan shared this information with The Sunday Times:

"Jo came down to the set at one point and I said, 'Oh hello, why are you here today?' And she said, 'Oh I just needed a break from the book - Dumbledore's giving me a lot of trouble.' And I said, 'But isn't he dead?' And she said, 'Well, yeah, but it's more complex...' I was like, [briskly] 'OK, I'm not gonna ask anything else!"

For those of you don't know, Dumbledore died in book 6, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Harry Potter fans around the world continue to mourn the death of this beloved character. Some have claimed from the beginning that Dumbledore was not dead and Snape fans went so far as to say that Dumbledore wanted Snape to kill him. Harry Potter fans are thrilled that the Headmaster will return in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. How Dumbledore will return is still a mystery. Will he be in human form, a spirit, or will he appear in the mirror that Harry received in book 5, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix?

While this interview did thrill Harry Potter fans endlessly, it was also a little troubling for younger Harry Potter fans. Dan Radcliffe has grownup quite quickly, especially with his role in Equus and fans should expect that Dan Radcliffe wants excitement out his career. What young actor wouldn't? But, it was quite surprising for Harry Potter fans to read how Dan Radcliffe wanted book 7 to end:

"I want him to die because I have a melodramatic yearning for a death scene. And the prophecy in the fifth book says only one of Harry and Voldemort can live. Or is it that neither can live while the other survives? Oh God, what is it? The fans will kill me if I've got that wrong"

Even the older Harry Potter fans will be saddened by the death of this popular character, but older fans almost expect for this death to happen. The real question is how will younger Harry Potter react? After all, many young ladies simply adore Dan Radcliffe.

Regardless of how Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ends, Dan Radcliffe has made a place for himself in the acting world and as we've seen in Equus, he can easily escape his role as Harry Potter. Dan Radcliffe fans should have many more of his films to enjoy in the future, even if they have to mourn his death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

well,I did hope that the series would continue, but since it'll end,Harry may die, though probably when he is too old.He may be narrating his own story!Well maybe.......

    Very well-written, Amy.

Very nice! I actually heard he is London's richest teen.

If anyone has seen pictures of Radcliffe from the play, Equus, its easy to understand why he's ready to move on from "Harry Potter" - its a very erotic play and he's certainly grown up quick! I think a death scene would symbolize that he's grown up, and would put a dramatic end to an incredible series.

I knew Dumbledore would still be a player. This is going to be so exciting.

I think Neville will Kill Voldemort, not Harry. I think all signs point to Neville.

If Harry does die the series will be flirting with some interesting philsophical/moral ideas outside of the usual good/evil struggle with good beaten beaten badly but winning in the end. Depending on the circumstances of the death of course. It will be interesting to see how the whole thing wraps up and if the themes flow effectively through the books. Will J.K. Rowling be the next CS Lewis or the next RL Stine?

I can't imagine Harry dying. That's not to say it won't happen, but I really hope not. I'm still half-thinking that there's much more to Snape's role in things than meets the eye, too. I'm glad Dumbledore will at least have a cameo appearance of some sort. I'm still mourning Sirius Black!

She has said that he is dead and won't come bak, but the flashbackthing would probably be useful for conveying more information and backstory. I think that if she's doing her job right, and not catering to fans, he will die. He is outgunned and now Dumbledore can't save him. He isn't going to defeat Voldemort with the bat bogey curse or by making things levitate.

I suspect Nevile will definitely play a role that will surprise us all (and Hagrid too, for that matter), but Harry is the one who will destroy He Who Must Not Be Named. Great article. Nice to hear that quote about Dumbledore. It could mean MANY things though, but at least we know he will have some sort of presence in book 7...maybe a flashback, but hopefully more.
