A plant that stores water in its stems or leaves is a succulent. These plants have adapted to environments where other plants can not flourish. Because of this, each of these plants has a unique way to survive. Many of these plants store water in their stems or leaves. Some of them started growing in trees. These plants use their roots for gripping instead of taking nutrients from the soil.
Because the environment where succulents evolved had periods of drought and searing sun, some of them developed very thick rootstocks. These are used to store water and nutrients for these plants during times when they are not available in the soil. There are also some succulents that have developed to flourish in rocky and extremely cold environments.
The best way to describe a succulent is "water-thrifty." No matter what the environment, these plants have evolved to save water for hard times. They have mastered water conservation. One of the ways these plants have done this is to reduce the surface of their leaves. This helps cut down on water loss from moisture evaporating from the leaves. Another way is to store water in their stems or leaves. Succulents are able to control both the amount of water they need and the amount they use, as well.
Succulents are not the only plants that are frugal with water. Jatrophas and dioscoreas are other plants that are valued by succulent collectors. They have unusual forms and unique growing habits, as well. These plants have also adapted to be able to thrive when there is not enough water. They have developed a much more brief growing season. They also have a long and leafless dormant period.
Many gardeners dream of a plant that is interesting, has beautiful flowers, and can do well even when they are neglected. Plants that are admired and have a large variety are desirable among gardeners. There is a type of plant that meets all these criteria. They are succulents.
Succulents are beautiful and easy to take care of. They do best in dry and hot temperatures. They can go long periods without watering, which is good if you tend to forget to water your plants. If you are lucky enough to live where succulents will thrive outside, you can have a beautiful rock garden in your hard that is enhanced with succulents. Hopefully, you have learned enough here to want to find out more about these easy to care for plants.
