An Island No More

Harold Dean Sink

The bright sunshine on the island shore
Has come to awake me from my sleepy snore.
White is the sand and glows from the sky.
The ocean's waves are very nigh.

Water is cold this frigid morn.
Getting up, and the seagulls have flown.
Deep blue is the water further on out.
Nobody will answer no matter how loud I shout.

What shall breakfast be?
What will become of me?
Stuck here all alone.
Wish I'd brought a cell phone.

Coconuts, berries, and some dates.
Sure wish I had a mate.
Guess I'l walk around
To see my new town.

So far all I sea is the ocean and land.
Grass, bushes and trees are all at hand.
Shells are there and there,
Starfish and crabs on the sand down here.

I'll walk some more to see what is around.
There is a cove up there in the ground.
The light breeze keeps me cool today.
I don't even hear animals out to play.

What is this I see on the other side?
Is this the woman to be my bride?
I thought I was alone on this island I made.
Are my eyes deceiving me from my grave?

No, she moved. She must be real.
I can smell purfume over here.
Gentle I shall wall so as not to alarm.
She must know I don't want to cause harm.

Carefully I take some flowers off their stalk,
Some berries I shall gather for something to talk.
"Hello," I say to not scare.
"How long have you been here?"

"Not long you see. I was sent from above.
Did you not get the message from the white dove?"
"No I did not, and are you kidding me?
I was asleep down the way under a cocunut tree."

"Well, now I am here and we are alone.
Thanks for the flowers and fruit, you are my own.
We shall take this island our place to be.
I'm glad you are here, and thanks for wanting me."

My island is not lonley anymore.
The sands are now shared forevermore.
Cool waters are welcomed on my feet,
For I have met the woman I want to keep.
