Pave my way through the swamps of Maryland
That woman's warning I shall heed
With fellow code user's helping hand
Steady goes I, the humble slave
Searching to remove the shackles of my soul
To live and breathe for a better day
A day where it's my own path I'll pave
Where I'm not blocked from my coveted goal
And I'll live for me, and no other way
The journey I face will be more than tough
Slave catchers, plantation owners, after my life
Impermeable minds, steel bodies, not enough
For Those free and those bound, full of strife
Weapons and muscles threaten my dream
While doubts and worries are relentless pests
And darkness blocks out the sun's sweet rays
But the code fuels my engine with a grand steam
Though I'm facing the same hindrances as the rest
The code will keep us whole, till the end of our days
The code sings me a sweet, sweet song
And the voice soothes my aching feet
For I know it won't be too long
Till freedom and I finally meet
My faith now resides in no higher powers
It doesn't bend, and doesn't break
Faith will always be there to comfort me
No matter how high adversity towers
That paved path the code and I will take
Until we're happy, and free
