An Old Lady, Unexplained Cigarette Smoke, a Blonde-Haired Baby Girl, Phone Ringing on Its Own--True Unexplained Occurences in My Home

Andrea Rowe
I am not a believer in ghosts. I am a Christian and believe after this life we pass on to a better one. However, there have been moments I have wondered. The following incidents happened in the house we currently live in and have lived in for seven years.

It began before we moved into the home. The lady who lived here before us was elderly and when she passed away a lot of her belongings were left behind. I absolutely adore books and wish I could find a job paying me to read rather than write. An entire bookcase filled with books was left behind. Unfortunately, most of these books were of the romance and western genres. I am a biography and science fiction nerd. My friend was visiting as I was going through the books to decide which ones to keep.

Out of the blue I wondered what the former owner of the house would think of someone going through her possessions. I wondered if she would enjoy the fact that a new family was moving in. I was seven months pregnant with our son and had baby on the brain. It was the most exciting time in my life being a first-time mom. I said to my friend, "I wonder if she would be happy a young family is moving in." Then I proceeded to reach up onto the bookshelf and without looking I pulled out the one book about raising children from infancy to teen years. My friend said it was creepy but I laughed it off as coincidence.

The former occupant of our home was a chain smoker. Even seven years later I catch whiffs of smoke while no one in the family or our group of friends is a smoker. I laugh and say, "That must be Mrs. D. watching over us." Everything was done in jest until one night when my four year old daughter said she was afraid of our bedroom.

We do not watch any ghost related television though I realize she could have heard of ghosts at school. I asked her why she feared our bedroom and was a little surprised to hear her say a Mimi lived in there. Mimi is the word our children use to describe their grandmothers. Our bedroom is the former bedroom of Mrs. D. I chalked it up to her imagination but it has been an incident to make me wonder. Our daughter is also afraid of her great-grandmothers and Mrs. D. would have been in that age range when she died.

Often our children's toys will be activated on their own. I consider this also a coincidence albeit creepy-especially in the middle of the night.

These incidents are nothing compared to some of the things our six year old son has said. A good example of this is when I told him we needed to redecorate his room as it still contains some nursery decorations this many years later. I almost passed out when he said, "We can't mom, we have to wait for her to grow up." My response was to ask who he was speaking about. I assumed he would say his four year old sister Hannah. He told me he didn't know her name but she had blonde hair and was very small. I asked how long he knew she was there. Owen mentioned a blonde haired girl as a playmate at home as early as when he could link sentences together. He responded with changing the subject and I did not push further.

It would probably be a good time to inform the readers of this article that my son has often talked about a little blonde girl. Prior to his first mention of her, I had dreams of a little blonde girl myself. In my dream she was the same age as Owen and I was pushing them both in a baby stroller. My dream is perfectly easy to understand.

My pregnancy with Owen did not begin as a singleton pregnancy. His twin ceased developing very early in the pregnancy. At no time have I ever mentioned this to him. He is very young and would have never caught the concept of what I was saying and if he had it would have made him terribly sad. I have no idea who this little blonde baby is. Maybe it is an imaginary friend as he has mentioned her several times? It continues to make me wonder as there is no way he could understand he was not always alone in my womb. He refuses to change the room very much until the little girl grows up. It must be an imaginary friend but why a blonde haired little girl who is a baby? With my dream and my mother's intuition saying the pregnancy would have brought us a blonde haired little girl had it not failed, this makes his claim the most difficult to resolve.

A phone left by our home's former occupant one rang by itself four times in a row over the course of 45 minutes this past Summer. This incident would not have been a cause for concern if we had a home phone line. Two years before this incident, we elected to go to complete cell phone usage. The first time the phone rang I assumed I was imagining it. Ten minutes later, it happened again. A third time it rang and I grew scared. I went into the room the most distance away from the phone and heard it ring a fourth time. It rang five times each time. At the time, our Internet was recently changed. We were told to purchase some type of kit to keep the Internet from interfering with our phone line but did not since we had no phone line. Consensus between my husband and his friends is that it occurred due to interference. It was entirely circumstantial that I happened to be preparing a Sunday school lesson at the same time this happened.

My experiences of the book and cigarette smoke are easily explainable by coincidence and smoke being caught in certain places of the house. Hannah's experience is a little more difficult but I can see it as being imagination fairly easily. Owen's claim of a blonde haired baby always with him is the one most difficult to refute especially since the first mention of her occurred within the first year he could put sentences together. Who knows? Maybe God made Owen's twin his guardian angel?

I always find these stories so interesting. I'm sure I wouldn't find them as interesting if they were happening to me, though. Very great read. I like how you tie in your family into your writing. It's something I've yet to do. :)

Great article!!! I never believed in ghosts until I met one on a camping/hunting trip. I am not one to make up stories but I've met a ghost. I like what you wrote here, if that means anything to you.

Wow! seems pretty scary, i wonder how your stories would be translated into film, now that might be super scary! I'm a Chrisian as well, I do believe there is a spiritual world, but above everything i do know that God's greater than anything out there that may creep us out.

This is an entertaining and fascinating article. I'm not sure what to make of you and your family's experiences! ;-)

I have to admit the phone thing scared me big time. The fact that it was so consistently spaced made me think there was an explanation for it. Nah--we won't be moving. My sister knew Mrs. Dorothy because she had severe lung issues and couldn't leave her home. My sister fixed her hair. Hannah is just afraid of elderly women in general. My sister said Mrs. D was great and totally not the normal grandma so if she's a ghost she's a good one. Owen's experience is somewhat comforting because losing the baby was extremely painful. I don't know about ghosts and spirits in regard to Christianity. I've been taught it's possible because of Saul (?) bringing back Samuel in the Bible. Who knows? As long as we have Christ we are ok and it's what counts.

Great article. I am also a Christian as well, and I believe in ghosts/spirits. When I was a child, the Holy Spirit was always called the Holy Ghost. It's still in the doxology, praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Wow, Andrea - that is creepy! I'm sure the old lady means you no harm and doesn't mean to scare you. :)

I am a christian. I believe that we move from here into life everlasting wherever it may be. However, there are occurrences that simply cannot be explained. I have a little visitor that seems to be very playful at times. I have placed things down while home alone and go back to retrieve them and they are gone. Later, I might return to the same spot and find them. Then, when I am home alone, I see images of faces peering around corners looking at me. I have moved once to avoid this, however, it continues to occur. So moving again is not an option.

I agree with Michelle Starkey, I would have to move!*lol* I found this totally fascinating though, I like reading ghost stories, I just wouldn't like one of my own!
