It has to learn both to give and to receive
The toughest part for some of us
Is wearing any emotion on our sleeve
A stoic front has its purpose
It shields us from prying eyes
It keeps us at a distance from certain sorrow
Our best friend becomes a clever disguise
But when we hide our true self too long
We lose our ability to understand
In an attempt to keep our heart safe from scrutiny
We give up empathy to stay in command
We cannot always be the one in control
Sometimes we have to let our hearts crack
When we allow the smallest peek into our lives
We give permission to accept love back
Do not be afraid to open the door
It is in showing our frailty that we grow strong
For we gather courage from the love of others
And that love gives our heart a place to belong

Post a CommentNever thought about it like that. Nice poem.
It took surgery to open my heart, but the circulation from the heart is more than just blood!
I read this twice just a few minutes after you published. I was left without words for such fine work and had to come back today to comment. You are so talented. Your poem has the wisdom of Solomon written like a song from King David. I loved it : - )
Fantastic poem. Definitely gives you something to think about.
Duh, speaking of not being perfect . . . I added a comment without being logged into AC, lol!
Someone once asked me, "Who are you pretending NOT to be?" I never understood until recently what they were asking. Opening my heart gave me the answer. Great poem Donna
Another great poem with fabulous advice.
Another priceless poem I will come back and read often. Love how you always tend to write what needs to be read and pondered upon. God bless!
Love reading your pieces!
I used to be a control freak, a one-way heart instead of "both ways heart" and you know what? I am so much happier letting others see my emotions, my true inner self and my weaknesses. It's easier to give love and receive love when we are "naked" (not that I run around w/o clothes on - but you know what I mean!) Off to work, Donna, still reading/commenting/etc. - I've dwindled it down to 500+ - so hang in there with me if I have missed something you've written while I was away. Hugs and cheers :)
