An Open Letter to a Fellow Golfer

Bob Johnson
I had the pleasure of golfing behind your group on Saturday.

Firstly, let me thank you for dramatically decreasing my hourly cost of entertainment on the golf course. I had planned to be out there for four hours, but managed to stretch it to five, for the same price.

If you get a chance, please give me a call and let me know what brand of fairway woods and irons you use. They must truly inspire confidence, given that your long drive was about 180 yards and yet you waited for the green to clear when you were still 230 out.

Your play on Number 7 was truly inspiring. If I had hit a drive that poorly (what was it? About forty yards into that poplar stand?) I, personally, would not have believed that I could thread the ball through fifty or sixty trees and make it to the green. To try that shot five times in a row is the very essence of grace under fire. It shows a level of confidence exceeded only by two incredibly ugly people with jug ears, stringy hair, buck-teeth and misshapen faces thinking that they will, if they try often enough, bear a beautiful child.

Your focus is something that all golfers should aspire to. Rarely will you see even the most dedicated golfer plumb-bob his third putt, and from a distance of only three feet. Bravo.

I couldn't help overhearing, while we were sitting in the clubhouse after our rounds, that you had shot an 81. I'm wondering if I might borrow your calculator at tax time.

I loved the last line.."I'm wondering if I might borrow your calculator at tax time." Brilliant!
