An Open Letter to McCain/Palin Supporters

David Basora
Dear McCain/Palin Supporters,

I have a some questions and have made some observations and I hope I can get some serious answers. I'm not going to ask you to be decent or civil. One would hope that will be the case nonetheless however it's not something I'm hoping for. I acknowledge that I have taken more than my fair share of cheap shots at your candidate. I am in no way sorry for what I've said but in the past I have admitted when I've been proven wrong and if you can prove me wrong here, I will do so again.

Let's start with my observations. When participating in an interview with sarah palin, the question was asked of her about the answer she gave someone regarding going into Pakistan and its remarkable similarity to Senator Obama's response that was berated by senator mccain. He right away jumped in and prevented governor palin from answering by saying the question was another example of "gotcha journalism". He went on to minimize and even attempt to discredit the situation. When it was brought to his attention that she was speaking to a voter, that did nothing to change his position.

Here's another scenario and don't worry I'm getting to my point shortly. Representative John Lewis from Georgia denounced the negative, divisive and borderline racist tone your candidate's campaign has been taking. He likened it to the atmosphere of a George Wallace rally and stated that both he and sarah palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division.

In response, your candidate, john mccain, said he was outraged by these comments and found them disturbing. He called it a brazen and baseless attack and said these remarks stopped him in his tracks.

This is what I've observed. Your candidate, john mccain, would rather try and excoriate the media than acknowledge the comments his running mate made to a voter. He condescends when he tries to shake it off as "gotcha journalism" all the while refusing to acknowledge that she was speaking TO A VOTER. Last I checked, VOTERS are exactly what he needs. Additionally, in his newest rendition of a stump speech, he's saying the media has written him off. I think he's missing the point that it's the polls, not the media, that are indicating his loss and the people polled are VOTERS.

He hears his running mate speak and he himself raises the terrorist issue. At their rallies there are cries of "Kill him!" referring to Senator Obama and "Treason" as well.

These are my observations. These are some of the things I've seen your candidate and his campaign as a whole do and say. Which leads to my questions.

1. Can you not see that he has so little regard for the American People that he has no problem writing them off and not caring what they think or say?

2. Can you not see that he has virtually no respect for you, his supporters, that he expects you to believe that he was raising the terrorist issue in a time when we are wondering if or when we might get hit again without thinking this could or would lead to hate speech?

He had to know that there would be a backlash and to then call these people, maybe even some of you, his staunch supporters, "fringe elements" I think is insulting to your intelligence. He said he's outraged? Why, because someone finally called him on what he was doing?

He has been making this a campaign of character instead of issues and even acknowledged that he would lose if he continued speaking about the economy. Doesn't that anger you? Would you rather someone who intentionally avoids issues because he knows he doesn't have a leg to stand on yet twists words and plays into your fears by raising the terrorist issue needlessly and quite wrongly?

When is enough truly enough? Why can't you see the disdain he has for you? If I'm wrong, prove it to me. Make me a believer.

Unfortunately and sadly, however, I don't think I am.

Michelle, I understand what you're saying and I'm not trying to dismiss you at all. I am, however, trying to get some answers to the questions raised in my article and you seem less than forthcoming in that vein. You would rather get defensive and point to Obama. Why can't you just answer the questions?

David, we can disagree agreeably as we both have shown. I'm grateful for that. When I said dumb things were said, I meant that it is ridiculous for someone to say the things they have said. I was not minimizing what they said. I am proud of McCain for looking them inthe face and defending Obama. You talk about my candidate, let's talk about yours. I feel very strongly about what I wrote. In my opinion Biden and Obama dismiss those of us who have a thought process. It's racist or in the past if we question anything. I am not that easily dismissed. I feel that both say a lot of things to get elected. But, I have no clue how Obama will govern. At least with Hilary, there is a history to look at. Sorry, No Obama, no how, now way. God bless the USA regardless of who is elected is my prayer.

Michelle, "some dumb things were said"? I guess you consider "Kill him" just a dumb thing? But look, let's forget all of that for a moment. I can't speak to the things you've been called by liberals or others as you claim here. What gets me is that your candidate has lied to you and basically dismissed you and doesn't even consider you important enough to give a proper explanation of things. Forget what Obama has or hasn't done. I'm speaking about what YOUR candidate has done and I'm asking serious questions here. If I can get some reasonable answers rather than defensive rhetoric, I'd consider it. I'm not a close minded person at all. But if we're going to speak about character, the lack of respect and dignity your candidate has rendered thus far speaks volumes

No. I feel Americans are buying into Obama's charisma. The man has nothing that we can really look at and see who he is and how he would govern. I find McCain to be the lesser of two evils. Obama knows racist things are being raised and that John McCain is not a racist. Why doesn't he just say that? Obama has risen through the ranks using questionable people to get there. That scares me. He comes across to me: whatever it takes to get me there, I'll do or say. As far as civility - I have been talked down to and called names by more liberals this year than I ever have. Read posts on this site. If you support Mcain you are called names and berated. Filthy things are said about Palin. Yes, some dumb things were said by a few at McCain rallies. Address the disgusting shirts worn and things said by Obama supporters. Obama was not man enough to address it. McCain was. I'll take McCain.
