An Overview of Australia's Eight States

Australia's great size allows something for each visitor. The sights and beautiful landscapes are something to be remembered. Each of Australia's great States has something to offer, and while you will need a significant amount of time in the country in order to have the opportunity to visit each state this will help you pinpoint the top ones on your list.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

This is where Canberra, the national capital is located. It is a beautiful city with highlights such as Lake Burley Griffin, the Parliament House, and the National Museum. It is surrounded by great natural surroundings making it perfect for those hiking enthusiasts to explore Namadgi National Park or Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

New South Wales (NSW)

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and is home to a beautiful harbour whereas the Sydney Opera House is located. Manly Beach a popular tourist spot is just a short ferry ride away, or there is also the Taranga Zoo. The Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley are other popular spots to explore within close proximity to Sydney. Bryon Bay and Jervis Bay are popular coastal spots to visit, especially on the backpacker route.

Northern Territory (NT)

The Northern Territory is popularly known for the famous Uluru or otherwise known as Ayers Rock, which is one of Australia's most famous features. Darwin is another popular stop for those in the state as is Kakadu National Park which has an abundance of natural wildlife.

Queensland (QLD)

Queensland is well known for it's beautiful weather - Beautiful one day, Perfect the next. The Great Barrier Reef has an assortment of water activities and marine life, and is a must-see. Surfer's Paradise is a popular tourist spot and is always entertaining with something to do. Cape Tribulation near Cairns, the Whitsunday Islands near Airlie Beach, and Fraser Island are some sights that you will want to see in this beautiful state. There is no shortage of things to do or place to see in Queensland.

South Australia (SA)

Barossa Valley is within close proximity to Adelaide and is a popular stop for many people. It features wineries, and beautiful hiking trails within Flinders Ranges. There are numerous villages to explore as well.

Tasmania

Tasmania is abundant in wilderness, and is probably most known for the Tasmanian Devil. The Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair World Heritage area has superb hiking trails and natural settings you won't want to miss. Hobart is a popular city within the state that you'll enjoy exploring.

Victoria (VIC)

Melbourne is Victoria's Capital, and is a large, but beautiful city. There is plenty of shopping and beautiful cafes to relax in with a cup of tea or coffee. The Great Ocean Road is one of the most famous sights within the state. It is a beautiful coastal drive that you won't want to miss if time permits. You can watch the penguins at Phillip Island, which is a huge tourist attraction.

Western Australia (WA)

Perth is well-known in Western Australia and is a handy stop as you continue on throughout the state. There is an abundance of wineries and surfing at Margaret River, and Shark Bay and the Ningaloo Reef are beautiful spots situated along the coast. Bungle Bungle National Park is also popular for those nature enthusiasts.
