An Overview of Box.net

Kathy Brewis
It seems that as far as technology goes it is getting easier for the consumer to receive and transfer files across the Internet. No longer do you have to send an attachment onto your email but you can take advantage of an online file management service. Part of an online trend for more streamlined services, online file management services provides the consumer a way to send, receive, access and store files by using their service. The service which I use is Box.net. In the coming paragraphs I will give you a little more information about this service and what it provides.

Box.net is just one of many online file management services. According to their website (http://www.box.net), they provide a "...powerfully simple online file management". Another positive aspect to this service is that no additional software is needed. You have everything you need there on the website. It is indeed a simple tool to use. This site requires registration in order for you to take advantage of its service. Once you have established a username and password you are then ready to continue to the next step, which would be to upload any files you may want to store, transfer, or share. Box.net is a great asset to have if you have larger files in which you want to store, transfer or share. You don't necessarily have to have large files in order to use Box.net. You can store smaller files as well. Box.net offers three options for the new user. They will be listed below:

• Individual
• Business
• Enterprise

You also have three different price plans ranging from a free account to an account which would cost you about $19.95 a month. With each of the varying plans you also have varying storage limits. This ranges from 1 gigabyte up to 15 gigabytes. There is also a file limit size for each plan. This comes between 10 megabyte to 1 gigabyte.

When you sign up for an account you will have the option to choose which plan that will meet your needs. If your needs change in the future, you can always change your plan. If you opt for an account in which there is a fee involved, you can choose to pay monthly or yearly.

I have a free account and I am very pleased with the services in which it provides. If ever a time came when I ran out of space on the current account, I would for sure upgrade to a paid account.
