The Shepherdstown Film Society shows movies for free on the campus of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The purpose of the group is to bring "more quality films to Shepherdstown" according to the society's website. The film society receives funding through Shepherd University 's Scarborough Society and Friends of the Shepherdstown Library which enables them to offer their movies for free to students and the local community.

Shepherdstown is a short drive from the Baltimore or the Washington metropolitan area. Shepherdstown is also in the heart of West Virginia 's Eastern Panhandle. Located across the Potomac River from Maryland the town is a short drive from Hagerstown , Maryland and is located close to Virginia 's Shenandoah Valley .

The Shepherdstown Film Society presents movies through out Shepherd University academic year. The group's spring schedule begins in January with a screening of "Diner" on January 28, 2011 . On February 11, 2011 the society will show "Good Hair" followed by "Serial Mom" on February 18, 2011 . The Shepherdstown group will show two movies in March as well. On the eleventh they will present "And God Created Woman." The Shepherdstown Film Society will show the French film "Belle de jour" on March 25, 2011 . The Society wraps up their season on April 1st presenting "Marty."

In addition to the movies the Shepherdstown Film Society offers post viewing discussions of the films. On some dates the society also offers pre-movie receptions. In the past the Shepherdstown group has sponsored local film festivals as well.

The Shepherdstown Film Society adds to the culture of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia by providing quality films and intellectual discussions. The movies also offer an alternative to going to Hagerstown , Frederick , Winchester , or Martinsburg to see a movie. The society offers an excellent option for a night on the town. A night watching a movie could be combined with a drink or meal in one of the restaurants or bars in Shepherdstown.
