An Understanding Boss

Two officers of a research organization, John and Jack, compare notes on their work, bosses and the Director of the Institute. In the end one of them asks the other about his chances for promotion. The following dialogue takes place.

John: Jack, you were complaining about the inordinate delay in awarding promotion to you.

Jack: Yes. There is some unfairness in the process. The prevailing policies governing promotion are violated.

John: Then why did you not take up the matter with the Head of the Institute, the Director.

Jack: I did take up. The Director expressed the view, "Jack, I know I can get a more qualified and experienced hand on a lower salary to fill your present post. So don't press for promotion". Then he abruptly stopped.

John: Then why doesn't he go for a fresh recruit with better qualifications and experience for your post?

Jack: Because he also knows that the same yardstick is equally applicable to his post too.
