An Unexpected Gift

A Father's Day Poem for New Dads

Deb Martin-Webster
When mom said I was on the way
he jumped up in surprise
and when she said it was a girl
he laughed until he cried

The little girl he wanted so
already in his heart
he rubbed mom's belly every night
I knew Dad from the start

I swear I heard him tell me once
he loved me more than air
his voice so gentle to my ears
I'd know it anywhere

Arriving late at twelve o'clock
his baby girl was born
wailing, kicking beet faced red
on that snowy winter's morn

Before my mouth could form the words
I knew this special man
the one who kissed my chubby cheeks
the child that was not planned

Da-Da, daddy, dad and pop
I voiced in every way
his heart and soul now part of me
I love you Dad, Happy Father's Day

That has to be one of the most sweet and beautiful poems I have ever seen for Fathers Day. Wonderfully written and full of love.
