Anacortes Lodging Review | the Nantucket Inn, Anacortes Washington

The Nantucket Inn - Chosen as the Best Hotel Lodging Fidalgo Island Anacortes Washington

Laura Wrede
Anacortes Island, Washington is actually a small, delightful, historical city on Fidalgo Island on the northern coast of Washington state. Here you will have access to island whale watching tours, the Anacortes marina for water sports, and the Anacortes ferry terminal making treks to the San Juan Islands and Canada (to name just a few tourist attractions). This popular vacation spot in Washington offers the traveler all of the amenities needed for a great vacation. Deciding where to lodge while here will be the most difficult decision of your stay.

There are several small motels offering little more than a bed and bath, yet can be budget friendly at certain times of the year. There are also several local inns and Bed and Breakfasts that will delight anyone looking for a place that offers coastal ambiance. One local historical landmark, however, stands out as an excellent choice among Anacortes hotels and lodging: The Nantucket Inn

The Nantucket Inn is located on Commercial Street (the main street in town). It is situated as a majestic sentry at the gateway of Anacortes, beckoning travelers to come experience the understated grandeur of early twentieth century living. This Colonial style mansion has much more to offer than a bed and bath, and yet with prices starting at at $79 a night, is unmatched by any of the other properties on the island for cost and features.

The mansion has eight rooms and suites all total--each quiet, spacious, impeccably clean, and delightfully decorated in ways pleasing to both men and women with a strong nod to coastal garden furnishings. Every room has its own private bath with two more guest baths in the main rooms downstairs. Most of the rooms have king size beds. The quality of the mattress and linens is deliciously comfortable, making it a place to linger in the morning as you sip coffee and look out at the morning views of the harbor and snow capped Mt. Baker. The rooms are modern without compromising the 1920's style, offering conveniences such as WIFi and flat screen TV with cable.

On the third floor of the mansion is the best kept secret. The entire floor is comprised or two rooms separated by a hall. One room is a complete apartment suite with bath, separate kitchen, breakfast nook, washer, dryer, and king bedroom with a window seat captains-bed. The adjacent room offers an over-sized king bed and a twin bed window seat. Staying in these rooms is perfect for the family traveling together or anyone who relishes utmost privacy. It is also the perfect place for anyone visiting the area for an extended period of time.

For physically challenged guests who are unable to negotiate stairs, there is a back ramp into the house along with a large and spacious king room on the first floor. It is often difficult for travelers who have physical limitations to find Inns that cater to special needs. The Nantucket Inn is sensitive to these issues making this discovery a pleasant surprise.

The Nantucket Inn is also available for large parties who wish to rent the entire facility at a very reasonable rate. This would be a fabulous Washington wedding location, reunion, business retreat, or for anyone desiring the run of the place. It has a full commercial kitchen, large living room and formal dining room...the possibilities for groups are endless.

Breakfast is served each morning in the downstairs kitchen and consists of fresh bagels, muffins, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, cereal, juice and coffee. There is a large dining room table where you can enjoy a meal, or if you prefer the outside, there is an expansive covered porch that allows a view of the water and a breath of fresh ocean air. There is also a large back lawn area with a covered gazebo and BBQ. Here you are free to lounge around or strike up a game of bocce ball on the grass.

Nantucket Inn's hostess, Gig Eichler, was warm, friendly and inviting while at the same time non-invasive to your privacy (as can sometimes happen in smaller establishments with "overly friendly" innkeepers). She is very familiar with all the local offerings for tourists, offers maps of the area, and is helpful pointing newcomers in the right direction. She is there to assist you with any special requests you may have. She made our stay 110% fantastic, going out of her way on many occasions to meet requests we made. We slept well, had a great time and loved Anacortes Old Town. The Nantucket Inn is a special place I would to return to year over year. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting the San Juan Islands via the Anacortes ferry terminal or if you want to stay on Fidalgo Island (or Anacortes Island as some call it) and enjoy this charming seaside village for a delightful laid back coastal vacation any time of the year. I give the Nantucket Inn 5 stars.
