Analytical Chemist Salary, Training & Job Requirements

How to Become an Analytical Chemist

W. Smith
Basic Job Description

Analytical chemists perform a wide variety of duties within the field of chemistry. Almost every specific chemistry field has its own branch of analytical chemists. However, while the ranges of specific duties for analytical chemists are broad the basic functions of an analytical chemist are the same whether you are an environmental analytical chemist or a biomedical analytical chemist. Essentially, you are responsible for analyzing matter samples (air, soil, vegetation, tissue, molecular et cetera) with the purpose of discovering their chemical composition in relation the specific field of chemistry you are involved with, then being able to relate that information in a clear, concise and accurate manner to others.

Requires but is not limited to the following abilities: taking and obtaining samples using sophisticated equipment and instruments; having precise attention to detail; superb ability for accuracy, computer proficiency; ability to communicate clearly both orally and by writing.

Training and Education Requirements

Depending on what level and type of analytical chemist is desired the training and education will vary. However, in all cases a minimum of a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field is a must. This means 3-5 years of formal education in an accredited university. Combined with this is the necessity of being familiar with and having experience working in laboratories, using computers and analytical programs and understanding the different chemical measurement techniques, terms and methods. A PhD is required for almost all research base positions.

Salary

The salary of an analytical chemist is, as in most professions, fairly liquid and corresponds directly to the amount of experience and education one has. The more education and experience the more one can expect to be paid. However, on a general scale an analytical chemist can expect to make between $43,000 and $68,000 a year. According to the American Chemical Society (ACS) analytical chemists with bachelor's degrees had a median salary of $62,000, those with master's $72,300 and those with PhD's $91,600.
