As the name implies, in analytical essays you are providing analysis on a particular theme, message, paper, or text. Generally analytical essay topics are assigned; however, professors do often allow you to pick a topic that is of interest to you, as long as it meets the parameters of the class assignment. Analytical essays are to be completed in APA essay format, with a title page, abstract, main body, and reference page.

Determining a topic for your essay should not be too challenging. Consider the possibility of basing your essay on particular assignments that you have for reading within your class. There is usually a great depth of material for you to access looking at this area alone. You can also turn to your school library or online libraries to narrow your search. You might even have a few choices selected and want to confer that you can locate sources for your ideas. The online library is a great place to start your search for reference material.

Many analytical essays are written on topics that are specific to your subject. For example, if you are studying in the field of Education, you would more than likely choose a topic that fit into the parameters of your subject area. You might describe literacy throughout the grades, high stakes testing, or debate the number of students in classrooms.

If you were in an English class, you might analyze the current work of poetry or novel that you were currently assigned to read. You could choose to analyze the protagonist and the antagonist, the plot and setting, or the events that take place in the writing. Analytical essays can also compare main characters from different works of writing, especially those that are focused on time of life in a particular time, war, or event.

If you are studying in the field of Education, your essays might be on classroom management, student diversity, or evaluating certain methods of assessment for students. In the study of sociology, you might write an analytical essay on marriage in different cultures, countries, or the impact of religion on society.

If you are studying nursing, you might write about the benefits of homeopathic medicine, healthy lifestyles, and diet and nutrition. In the field of social work, you might write an essay analyzing the affects of abuse on families, or how malnutrition affects the welfare of children.

All in all, you will be writing and studying information and topics that pertain specifically to your field, and often to a general interest that you have in that field. Analytical essays for college should be written to inform a reader in the basics of the topic you are dissecting, as well as provide them with information that they can make an educated decision in regards to what you have presented them with. Like any essay, you are able to sway them towards your belief. This is best accomplished by utilizing established sources to back up your views and cite within your article and reference page. This brings credibility to your view and can steer your reader to gain more information on the topic.
